The title and the lede paragraph are not correct. Abortion was illegal in Ireland going back to at least 1861. See: Eighth Amendment of the Constitution of Ireland and Abortion in Ireland: Legal Timeline. I am not a lawyer, but it is my understanding the 8th Amendment basically just moved the ban into the Constitution. --SVTCobra 01:17, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- From looking at the actual text (Click Here) the vote put a new section into the eight amendment. Constitutional law is, in some aspects, the same. There is no such thing as 'repealing' or 'overturning' a part of the constitution so on a technical terminology grounds - neither is right. This vote to add section two to amendment eight, just says we are no longer going to use another part or clarify an interpretation. - If you mean the use of the word "repeal," Guardian, Atlantic, and BBC all use it, both in their own voices and when quoting others. - AZO, I think you are right. Looking at Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018, they didn't exactly repeal the entirety of the 8th. However, and this is important, it does reverse the 1983 referendum to amend the 8th. That linked article, does however acknowledge the popular vernacular of 'Repeal the Eight'.
