Kidnappers in Nigeria have killed at least 33–38 hostages they abducted from Banga village in Zamfara state, despite families paying the demanded ransom for their release. After abducting 56 people in March 2025, the attackers—commonly referred to as "bandits"—demanded about ₦1 million (roughly $655) per captive and eventually received over ₦50 million from the community.

Despite this payment, only 18 captives (mostly women and one boy) were released, and survivors reported that the remaining hostages were killed, many "slaughtered like rams". The released individuals are now hospitalized with serious injuries. This incident highlights the growing crisis of organized kidnappings for ransom in northern Nigeria, which has become widespread due to weakened local governance and persistent insecurity.

Although Nigerian law criminalizes ransom payments, families often pay anyway, citing the government's inability to protect them. The government and local officials have pledged increased efforts, but security remains a severe challenge in these regions of Nigeria. BigKrow (talk) 18:47, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
