Talk:Prosecutors charge man with attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump
Add topicCorrection — October 4, 2024
This article inaccurately reports multiple dates. It claims prosecutors filed the superseding indictment on October 1, but they did so on September 24; in the first sentence, this article states the alleged assassination attempt occurred earlier in October when it occurred in September; and the second paragraph reports the prosecution's September 23 statement "probable cause to support additional charges" was present as having been made on September 30.

Review of revision 4799455 [Not ready]

Revision 4799455 of this article has been reviewed by Michael.C.Wright (talk · contribs) and found not ready at 18:28, 26 September 2024 (UTC).
Comments by reviewer: Our article is incorrect regarding the charges. The following two federal charges were previously filed (NBC News, Kosnar, Barnes, and Gregorian):
The following three charges were added:
I also changed instances of the word "attack" to "attempt" or something similar. Routh did not attack the president. He is charged with attempting to assassinate him. Our statement "[i]nvestigations in the intervening days have shown that Routh proceeded with intent to do harm." should be revised to somehow indicate that the prosecutors intend to prove Routh intended to assassinate the president. We can't say that the investigation shows intent. If someone does say that, we can quote or paraphrase their statement with attribution. Also note the style guide requirements for image captions + attribution and time formats (converted to UTC). Questions about the above? Ask. If possible, please address the above issues then resubmit the article for another review (by replacing {{tasks}} in the article with {{review}}). This talk page will be updated with subsequent reviews. |

Notes for author(s):
Thank you for the additional edits. I have since tweaked a few things to make it clear Routh is accused of, not yet proven guilty of attempting to assassinate the former president.
Notes for reviewer:
Since there is time before this story goes stale, I have pre-reviewed it so another reviewer can verify. @Gryllida, Heavy Water: any takers?
I have included in-line citations as <!--html comment-->, which can be seen using the source editor.

Trump
[edit]Their is more than one Trump in the world, title be rephrased as Former US President Trump? Thanks. BigKrow (talk) 19:46, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
- I think Trump and the event are both known well-enough that we don't have to clarify which Trump was the suspected target. But I don't feel strongly on that and would defer to others' opinions.
- But now that you mention it, the title isn't in active voice so it should be changed. I hate to change it again, but it should be and therefore Trump can be clarified along with that change. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 15:27, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
indicated or charged or accused
[edit]Unclear to me what's the difference? Gryllida (talk) 23:51, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
- In the US, we must assume everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Therefore we have to ensure we don't use verbiage such as 'the man planned to kill Trump' because that has to first be proven in court. Therefore, before there is a conviction, we use terms like 'suspected of,' or 'accused of,' to indicate the defendant hasn't been found guilty.
- The word 'charged' in this context means the prosecutor is officially accusing someone of a specific crime. The prosecutor now must prove to a judge or a jury that the suspect did in fact commit that specific crime they were charged with committing.
- In the statement "details of their investigation that indicate...", the word indicate here means investigators believe there is evidence that points to or indicates "probable cause," which is a legal term for a standard that must be met before authorities make an arrest, conduct a search, or obtain a warrant. Prosecutors must use that evidence in court to defend or justify their arrest and/or search, a requirement defined by the Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution.

- Suggest changing headline to include country. possible options
- Prosecutors charge man with attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump at golf course
- Prosecutors charge man with attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump at golf course in Florida
- Prosecutors charge man with attempted assassination of former United States President Donald Trump at golf course in Florida
- I like the third option. Is it okay -- not too wordy? @Michael.C.Wright @BigKrow Maybe other suggestions. Thanks!
- -- Gryllida (talk) 03:20, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- Given that headlines should be "as short as possible"[1], should we go with simply "Prosecutors charge man with attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump?"
- If there is agreement, I'll move the article and publish it, unless there is any disagreement with the pre-review above. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 13:46, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
