You shouldn't make such assumptions based on the interviewee's involvement with the Wikimedia movement; that's unreasonable, especially when it comes to the sensitive topic of puppetry. I'm a verified reporter on zhwn. I know this isn't directly related to our enwn, but having my identity verified on a friendly site always proves I'm an independent individual. @BigKrow I believe this is the traditional attire of the Pentecost Island people in the South Pacific. As a people also from Oceania, I find this inappropriate. Wikimedia Commons has already shows that as long as an image is educational, even a fully nude images are allowed. Yes, we are a citizen media and need to fully consider the readers’ feelings. What is RUWN? I’ve never heard of it.

Most people spend their lives in just one or two countries. What made you take your first journey and decide to dedicate your life to exploration? Did you ever imagine you would become a traveller?

Since I was born in the USSR, I could not have imagined becoming a real traveller, because the country’s borders were closed. I only became a traveller in 2006 when I went to Ethiopia. This was done with a specific purpose: I had a directive from the Union of Artists, according to which I planned to hold a photo exhibition upon returning. I never travelled aimlessly; each trip was connected to a creative project. Since 1992, after the USSR ceased to exist, I visited many countries as a tourist in organised groups. A traveller and a tourist are completely different concepts.

Besides “traveller,” the word “explorer” is both familiar and strange. Would you consider yourself an explorer? What is an explorer?

Of course, I am an explorer. I try to visit places on the planet where few foreigners have set foot. But if I have the opportunity to visit tourist countries along the way, I do that too.

With the improvement of living standards and technology, travel has become a more popular activity. How do you think travellers can gain knowledge and experience through such activities?

A true traveller never visits distant countries just for rest or entertainment. Those who do are called tourists. This year I spoke at a meeting of Russian travellers in Moscow.

You once said, “Travel is not equivalent to a vacation.” Could you talk about what “true travel” and “pure exploration” mean to you?

A vacation is taken for rest, relaxation, and entertainment, so that one can return to work refreshed. Travellers do not relax on the road. It is not an easy activity, and sometimes the moral challenges are even harder than the physical ones. At a symposium in Koktebel, someone asked if he could join me for a journey together. But when I asked a leading question, it turned out he planned to use vacation time—no more than a month—whereas a journey lasts up to six months. The question resolved itself.

Have you ever had a purely relaxing vacation experience?

In early childhood, I liked to rest and have fun. I live in Crimea. The Black Sea coast is not far from Simferopol. In adulthood, no—I find it boring.

During your travels, have you ever been truly afraid or felt like giving up? How did you get through it?

Yes, there were difficult moments. Sometimes, in the second month, fatigue sets in, making it hard to move and you feel exhausted. Then it passes, and a “second wind” opens. There were times when I did not know what would happen next—uncertainty… Once I got lost in Bolivia and, having lost the trail, tried descending a mountain elsewhere. I fell, got some bruises, and washed my clothes in the morning. The town of Tupiza has many canyons. An interesting place.

You’ve been to many regions with different cultures, including ones that retain more natural lifestyles, which might surprise visitors accustomed to their own culture. As a traveller, what attitude should one have when exploring and observing?

I have a whole mini-textbook on this topic. The term is “Cultural Immersion.” I’ve really mastered this subject.

If someone decides to take some time off for purely cultural or natural exploration, what advice would you give based on your experience? Especially for those who feel uneasy, like not knowing how to communicate.

I’ve been to countries where almost no one speaks English, let alone Russian: China, Mongolia. Still, I managed to communicate using “sign language.” I advise everyone not to fear not knowing foreign languages. Those who want to, find opportunities; those who don’t, find excuses. (Socrates)

How do you ensure your safety abroad, especially when you need to film or record? How do you maintain respect at the same time?

Anyone who chose Ethiopia as their first step as a traveller will not be lost in other countries. Ethiopia is a good “school”: someone might even throw a stone at a camera pointed their way. I keep my thoughts to myself. For example, if I don’t like Muslims or Islamists, or some of their traditions, I tell no one and show tolerance—after all, I am their guest, not the other way around.

You’ve carried out several projects in Crimea with government support. Are there many people engaged in exploration like you? Do you have organisations for exchange or collaboration?

The support from the state existed, but not financial: all projects are self-funded. There are very few people willing to work for free and cover their own expenses. I think most are concentrated in the “Wikimedia” project: not everyone will write articles for Wikipedia for free. Most journalists will write nothing without payment.

You’ve been to China. What kind of exploration did you do there, and what was your impression?

I prefer to visit countries that have preserved ancient traditions and even remnants of the medieval period. China is very modern; there are no low prices, especially for accommodation (as in Vietnam or Laos). As a music lover, I would say China, Korea, and Japan have lost their musical ethnicity. China has many ancient relics, which makes it interesting. I visited an ethnic village in China—it’s a tourist attraction, not authentic. I also visited Hong Kong and Taiwan: there are differences.

How do you document each journey? Do you focus more on photos, writing, or memory itself? How do you turn it into an artistic or academic work?

There was a six-month trip where on the last day I was robbed in the city centre, losing all my footage. Text emerges after returning, and knowledge cannot be stolen. Thus, I published a book without illustrations. Photos are used for illustrating books and newspaper articles, and for exhibitions.

You are over 50. Do you still plan more crazy intercontinental trips? Have you felt limitations from age, or how do you maintain mental and physical fitness?

Since I choose countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Latin America while living in Europe, all my trips are intercontinental. Every Monday I walk 8.5 km. On trips, I can walk up to 20 km a day. If 30 km, I get tired. I cannot walk more than 30 km in a day.

Some say growing up is a form of cultural travel. You were born in Soviet Ukraine. How did your childhood and youth in the USSR influence you?

I am glad the borders opened and freedom appeared. But some don’t notice this; they don’t need such freedom. Here are interesting psychological observations on this topic. In general, I was born in Crimea, which was artificially (without the population’s will) annexed to the Ukrainian SSR.

Looking back at your youth, how has the passage of time and development of external factors (like technology) changed the experience of travel itself?

In my youth, I did not travel because the borders were closed. I did go to Moscow, Leningrad, and Tallinn, but cities in the USSR were similar to each other. In my childhood, the word “tourist” accompanied a picture of a man in sneakers with a backpack climbing a mountain. Today, the equivalent caption applies to a beachgoer: sunglasses, a lounge chair under a palm tree by azure waters. Everything flows, everything changes.

Many people are stuck in their jobs and need a thorough rest even during vacations. For those who cannot travel far but need relaxation and meaning, what advice do you have?

These are unfree people; I wouldn’t want to advise them much. They say they cannot go “over the ocean,” but in reality, they don’t want to.

World Tourism Day is approaching. How do you think mainstream commercial tourism can be linked with exploratory travel?

It cannot, and it should not. There is a Russian proverb.

During your travels, have you ever encountered judicial or legal issues? How did you handle them?

I was deported from Fiji. To reach Vanuatu, Tonga, and Samoa, one must return to Fiji each time. When I returned to Fiji for the fourth time, I did not have a flight ticket out. I planned to try obtaining an Australian visa in Suva, but I was detained at the airport, spent two weeks under arrest in a hotel, and was deported to Moscow via Singapore—even though my passport had four three-month Fiji visas.

Are areas that are rarely visited and described as somewhat “primitive” always dangerous? What is your view?

No, on the contrary, these places are not dangerous. I was robbed in the centre of a major metropolis in front of dozens of passersby, who were not surprised because they were used to it. That was Johannesburg. I had been warned about public robberies, but I thought it exaggerated. Another risk comes from large cities in Papua New Guinea because people are very poor and prices are high. They take knives and go onto the streets to get food. Small villages are safe.

How do you deal with intense cultural clashes or misunderstandings? Any memorable experiences?

I always adapt to foreign realities. Because of this, I have had no conflicts.

Long trips with creative purposes are full of uncertainty. How do you adjust your mindset, especially when facing setbacks?

Yes, on trips things often don’t go according to plan. For example, on my last trip to African countries, I planned to visit Niger, Nigeria, and Algeria, but it didn’t work out. “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst” is an old saying.

Taking a few photos or writing short notes is not too difficult, but how do you produce long travelogues or systematic works?

I never write during trips. In the early 2000s, I carried a film camera (Zenit, FEF, etc.), and trips were short, which allowed some systematisation of the photos. But for six-month journeys covering ten or more countries, a digital camera is essential. I always note in a notebook where and when a photo was taken and what it depicts. Upon returning, I reconstruct the chronology of events. Only this method works.

Do you use any tools, simple techniques, or methods that you find especially practical for travelling and creating work?

I use a method described in my own textbook “Homeless Tourism” (title is hard to translate). The most interesting part is the description of sleeping arrangements, which may seem very extravagant: on a cemetery, in a public toilet, in a police station, etc. The textbook is important because much of my activity is based on it.

Do you encourage more people to explore rarely visited regions?

One might, at this project, call me (justifiably) an "Institutionalist". I believe in and support a mission to publish and promote within the scope of credible journalism. I have said, and will continue to say it: Citizen journalism is a righteous endeavor. An important job of a Reviewer and an Admin here is to call balls and strikes. Down the road, we most certainly have the potential to create a cat known as "Notable Wikimedians" or something like that. At this project (right now, at least), I see little justification for making a cat just for Viktor.
