Talk:Sandstorm in Iraq leaves thousands hospitalised

Revision 4850946 of this article has been reviewed by Gryllida (talk · contribs) and has passed its review at 06:45, 20 April 2025 (UTC).
Comments by reviewer: 1) There were issues with copyright. I've made minor edits to alleviate this, but this should be ideally avoided by the author(s). 2) The BBC source links a UN report, which may be added as reference and article may be expanded, up to 24 hours from date of publication. 3) I am slightly uncomfortable with passive voice in the headline. 'Sandstorm in Iraq leaves thousands hospitalised'? I've moved the page. Would be nice to have pictures, but OK if none found with free licence. Thank you. Keep up the great work. The reviewed revision should automatically have been edited by removing {{Review}} and adding {{Publish}} at the bottom, and the edit sighted; if this did not happen, it may be done manually by a reviewer. |

Main Lead Update Request
[edit]@Gryllida: Could you kindly update the main page leads? The last update features the article Nobel laureate writer from Peru, Vargas Llosa dies. Since then, five six new articles have been published. Thank you. -- Asked42 (talk) 07:37, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- Also ping @RockerballAustralia. -- Asked42 (talk) 07:42, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- Can you update and I sight the edits? Gryllida (talk) 09:54, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Asked42 could you please make a wiki page about the lead update script of yours and add a few screenshots? It would help me a lot when I want to try it out, and when adding it as a gadget in user preferences. Thank you so much for your help. Gryllida (talk) 10:47, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- Updated. Gryllida (talk) 10:55, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: Thanks for the update. Here's how to install and use the script. There's also a screen-recorded video that might help.
- After the installation, you will see a form in this section. -- Asked42 (talk) 16:57, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- awesome thanks i will have a look Gryllida (talk) 21:40, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Asked42 I had a look at the screencast and I like the idea however I would like to add it as gadget which multiple people can edit (you, me, anyone else who is comfortable and is not a vandal). Would you be comfortable if I nominated you for InterfaceAdmin, and added the lead manager as gadget? The interfaceAdmin user right allows you to edit technical pages in the MediaWiki: namespace, including gadgets. I am asking because it is better if a tool has multiple maintainers in case one of them has a holiday or another unforeseen change in circumstances. Thank you. Gryllida (talk) 07:33, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @Gryllida! I'd certainly be happy to convert it into a gadget, as that would make it more accessible and beneficial to others.
- Regarding the Interface Administrator rights, I've given it some thought, and I'd be happy to accept the nomination. I'd like to help maintain not only the Lead Manager but also work on updating some of the existing gadgets that are currently outdated or facing issues.
- I have experience working with MediaWiki software, CSS, and JavaScript, and I also have a moderate understanding of Lua. Asked42 (talk) 13:30, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
Copyright material not removed
[edit]{{editprotected}}
The following phrases[1] are identical to phrases used by the BBC[2]:
- "...as one of the five countries most vulnerable to climate change as it encounters regular sandstorms, sweltering heat and water scarcity."
- "...left one person dead and more than 5,000 needing treatment for respiratory illnesses."
I propose the following correction statement be posted after the plagiarism is removed:

- i went for 'reword and add correction'; please check it out and sight, and/or leave a note here if further revision is required Gryllida (talk) 11:29, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- I had hoped another reviewer or admin might step in to sight these changes, to avoid this becoming a back-and-forth between Gryllida and myself. At this point, only one statement remains flagged as similar by Earwig (see results), and it appears to involve a common-use factual construction rather than creative expression.
- That said, in the instance—"UN has listed Iraq as one of the five countries 'most vulnerable' to climate change"—the phrasing closely mirrors the BBC source. I recommend erring on the side of caution and rephrasing slightly for originality and clearer attribution, e.g., "According to the UN, Iraq is among five countries considered most at risk from climate change."
- In confirmed cases of plagiarism, once a correction has been verified, it should be sighted without delay. Leaving such edits unsighted extends public exposure and reputational risk to the project. The original contributor and the reviewer may also face legal risk. Even self-sighting and noting it for post-review is preferable to correcting but not sighting. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 15:47, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
- ok i will have a look Gryllida (talk) 11:31, 24 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Michael.C.Wright do you have access to edit this page? Wikinews:CopyvioRemovalBacklog. If yes, please add links. Gryllida (talk) 11:47, 24 May 2025 (UTC)
- I can not edit the page. That is why I made an edit request using {{editprotected}}.
- If I had access, I would have done it myself and self-sighted, as I did with the article "Explosion in Iran's largest port, Shahid Rajaee, heard 50 km away, leaves dozens killed, thousands injured". —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 13:00, 24 May 2025 (UTC)
- I reworded like you said, removing 'most vulnerable' and replacing with 'most at risk'. Self sighted. If further editing is required, please ping me. Gryllida (talk) 12:30, 24 May 2025 (UTC)
