I talked at length twice with Shelby Foote in Memphis in 1997 and 1998, at a mid-town restaurant and at Rhodes College, respectively. He was the enchanting epitome of a southern gentlemen. I was amazed that, even at his then 80 years, he could speak with authority and confidence on the Civil War and a variety of other subjects. He's one of the individuals whose passing, though we only met twice and exchanged a few letters, I regret personally... I wasn't ready for him to die -- I had grand ideas of more long and fascinating discourses with him. --Chiacomo (talk) 29 June 2005 04:12 (UTC)
