President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree awarding the former Speaker of the Parliament Andriy Parubiy, killed in Lviv, the title of Hero of Ukraine.

A petition to award the title of Hero of Ukraine to Parubiy was registered on the presidential website on September 2. It collected the necessary 25,000 signatures, the threshold for the proposal to be considered by President. The Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, also supported the request.

Parubiy was among several people who were conferred Heros of Ukraine. Others were writer Volodymyr Vakulenko, pupil and footballer Stepan Chubenko.

Former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko lauded the decision, recalling that Parubiy dedicated his entire life to serving Ukraine.

Andriy Parubiy, 54, who served as the Chairman of Verkhovna Rada from 14 April 2016 to 29 August 2019, was shot and killed in Lviv on 30 August. He died at the scene from injuries. The killing was the latest in series assassinations in Ukraine and Russia, part of a shadow war between the two countries, amid Russian invasion that started in 2022.

First, National Police made a statement that a political figure was murdered after a shooting in the western Ukrainian city. Then lawmaker Iryna Herashchenko confirmed that it was Parubiy who was killed.

"Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslav Kravchenko have just informed me about the first known circumstances of the terrible murder in Lviv. Andriy Parubiy has died," President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

The shooter managed to escape. Later, Ukrainian authorities detained a suspect, and allege there is a Russian link to the killing.

There is an unverified clip published online which is claimed to show the shooting. What appears to be a gunman posing as a courier approaching Parubiy from behind, the pair are obscured from view by a tree. Newsweek could not independently verify the footage.

Parubiy was an active participant of Euromaidan. He also served as Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine from February till August 2014.

The suspected killer of Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Parubiy admitted his role in the politician’s death on 2 September. He claimed to have carried out the crime in an act of "revenge" against the country’s authorities. He denied having worked with Russian special services.

The killing of Parubiy is one of several killings that conduct Russia and Ukraine against each other. In July, SBU colonel Ivan Voronych was shot dead inside a secure compound in central Kyiv.

A few days before the murder of Parubiy, an explosion in a shopping centre in Moscow killed one person and injured several persons, including a man identified by Russian median as a high-ranking FSB officer.

Another prominent Ukrainian nationalist figure, former MP Iryna Farion, was shot on the street in Lviv in July last year.
