A liquid universe--April 20th, 2005[edit]

That's right. Scientists now believe that the early universe was liquid. Of a sort, that is.

At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, scientists collided quarks and gluons at high energies. What they expected was a cloud of loose quarks, but instead, it came out like a liquid.

Scientists believe that this liquid was formed in the same conditions as it would be seconds after the "big bang." However, the results of the experiments don't match up with theoretical calculations of what should have happened, so we can't be quite sure yet. Scientists have yet to publish the results completely, so I'd rather wait than say the early universe was quark soup. It just sounds funny to me.
