Sunday hadcelebrating the 40th birthday of the world famous, and , , in , . Thousands arrived early to take part in the free celebratory tour of the House, where they were also given one of 6,000 cupcakes made for the anniversary of the first official opening on October 20, 1973.
Special guests included three-generations of the family of, who designed the landmark in 1957. Jan Utzon, the son of the House's architect, tells the seeing his fathers dreams reflected in the tourist destination is "a tribute to the Australian spirit [...] It is a unique Australian expression of will and enthusiasm".
Celebrations will continue over the next week, all keeping with the theme of the 'Australian spirit'. The first day of festivities saw rock legendsinging 'Happy Birthday' for the occasion, as well as traditional performances and a flotilla of iconic Australian lifeguards.
A visit from theroyal couple and music concerts are just some of the confirmed events set to pay tribute to the iconic, multi-shell structured roof.
