A study released by the New England Journal of Medicine on January 22, 2015, found that the overall mortality rate of extremely premature infants declined between the years 2000 and 2011.

More babies born after 22 to 28 weeks of gestation have a greater chance of survival, according to an article published in Health Day.

But Dr. Ravi Mangal Patel, who is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, said "Although our study demonstrates that overall survival has improved in recent years among extremely premature infants, death still remains very high among this population."

According to Fox News, even though the mortality rate declined, the United States still falls behind 25 other developing countries.
