Egyptian activists sentenced to life in prison[edit]

Ahmed Douma was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday along with 229 other Egyptian activists who played a key role in forcing former President Hosni Mubarak to step down. Douma, who was also fined US$2 million by the court for setting fire to a school housing rare documents, is accused of rioting, inciting violence and attacking security forces. Douma, Ahmed Mahar and Mohamed Adel are already serving three-year sentences for protesting without a permit, which is a violation of Egyptian law.
Judge Mohammed Nagy Shehata handed down the sentence, which for life, is 25 years. Thirty nine minors who participated in similar actions at Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt in 2011 were sentenced to 10 years in prison. Muburak, who has been in detention since 2011, is awaiting a retrial of an embezzlement case against him.
