People participating in World Environment Day 2008

Rwanda hosted the World Environment Day (WED) ceremony in the Volcanoes National Park under the theme 'Many Species. One Planet. One Future',

Actor Don Cheadle was appointed as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations environment agency and took part the ceremony. Cheadle has a record of humanitarian and environmental advocacy, including active campaigning for genocide victims and in 2009 he appeared in the UN Seal the Deal! campaign.

World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The first World Environment Day was in 1973. World Environment Day is in summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

A new website has been developed to improve the UN's communications on its internal sustainability performance. Greening the Blue, shows what is happening to make the UN more sustainable and provides advice to staff on how they can contribute.

Thousands of activities will also be organized worldwide, with beach clean-ups, concerts, exhibits, film festivals, community events and much more. World Environment Day is similar to Earth Day.
