McDonalds announced on Friday that it was recalling 12 million promotional glasses due to the presence of cadmium in the painted design. The company will now pay customers $3 for every glass customers return.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned consumers to immediately stop using the glasses. Cadmium is a heavy metal identified as a carcinogen. Long-term exposure has been associated with kidney and bone ailments and a variety of other health problems.
The sale of the glasses was part of the promotional campaign for the movie "Shrek Forever After".
