Hot on the heels of the news that Top of the Pops will not feature in the BBC One TV schedules for Christmas 2008 and Simon Cowell's subsequent offer to revive it on ITV, comes the news that the show may have a future after all.
Will the "Sleeping Beauty" awake?[edit]
Mark Cooper, head of music entertainment for BBC TV, may be the prince who gives the show the kiss of life. "It's a Sleeping Beauty. One day it will come back, in the way that Top Gear and Dr Who came back" he told The Times "It's probably no longer the case that Top of the Pops can be revived on the basis of it being an entertainment programme – instead it may have to be judged as a public service."
R&B singer Lemar recently called for the return of the show and raised the matter with the UK Culture Secretary, Andy Burnham. Oasis front-man Noel Gallagher has blamed its absence for social breakdown and "people getting into weird shit like knifing each other".
The recent loss of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross from the BBC One schedule, has acted as a reminder to record bosses of how few slots there are currently for 'live' pop performances on peak-time television.
TOTP was last seen on July 30, 2006.
