Weirdness[edit]

Yes of course my sister does and Ill not trouble her for a written authorization just to please Wikinews. I suspect that if I took a selfie you'd ask for some kind of proof? This is why I call your "approved news" a subversive tit for tat censorship. It’s a delicate balance between the rights of the creator and the public’s interest. When in conflict, the balance tips more heavily toward the public’s interest, which is often contrary to what the creator believes to be fair or just. Albeit I understand your position but taking this strict hard line stance (in the example of my sisters picture) does not qualify Wikinews as a news agency that puts the right to know or see of the reader ahead of their own personal protection. So no guts, no more of my articles. Too many others with more readership and respect to disseminate news. Your strict policies are at the other end of the news spectrum from "fake news" (no copyrights reserved) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Codeforepub (talkcontribs)

@Codeforepub: It is not to please Wikinews, first of all. She is the author of the photo and only she has the right to release it under any license she wishes to release it in. If you upload it without her consent, you are violating her copyright. Anyone who writes on the internet frequently would know this. If not, all that I can say is to read about copyright, or watch a good video (probably on YouTube) A selfie is likely to be identified. And the best place to discuss about media would be Wikimedia Commons, but let me tell you a secret. If it was a selfie, but if the EXIF data is missing, that is enough to question the authenticity of the photo. Of course, you could upload the original photo taken by some dead relative of yours, which never appeared on the internet and claim to be yours, but one day, when you are caught lying, and doing this repeatedly, you would lose your reputation, might get blocked, and would never be able to contribute to Wikimedia Commons again. (Well, if you have problems with media upload, why are you asking here? You should be asking on Wikimedia Commons. Only if your photo was locally uploaded as fair use image, then Wikinews can be questioned. But for that, you need to write a good fair use rationale. In the end, no matter what the public interest may be, the author is the sole owner of the image and only that person has right to choose what happens to their media.
