Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hi. I reviewed the article as not-ready for publication; my main concern was that there wasn't a current event for newsworthiness, as explained in my review comments.

For a synthesis article on this general subject, there'd have to be a discrete current event. It's possible one might put together some original reporting related to it; should you be interested in pursuing that admittedly challenging approach, I'd suggest seeking advice at the assistance water cooler. --Pi zero (talk) 20:59, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya Pi zero - thanks for reviewing the article. I think maybe it would best if I wait until there is a big news story regarding Higgs boson - then would I be able to simply re-use the background material I wrote? I expect there will be a headline this season. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 21:52, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
With the difficulties I found up front, I don't think I pushed on to do source-checking on the article text, for verifiability and copyright. Any material borrowed would have to be reviewed again later; but, supposing it'll pass inspection when the time comes, reusing it has the considerable merit of not requiring it to be written again :-). I'll just move the article to your user space, for safekeeping, and you can draw on it when-and-if. (I'm recalling the Lexx subplot that most civilizations of Earth's type self-destruct by creating a device to measure the mass of the Higgs boson, which causes their planet to be reduced to the size of a small pea.) --Pi zero (talk) 23:37, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Now at User:Arbitrarily0/CERN physicists expect discovery of Higgs boson before 2013. --Pi zero (talk) 23:45, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, excellent - thanks Pi zero. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 15:34, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews coverage of this story hasn't gone well —yet— has it. Besides general initial-learning-curve stuff for you, science stories have some pitfalls of their own — one has to be very wary of mistakes commonly made by the mainstream press. Actually, even those common mistakes are typically not all that complicated (I wonder if I should try to write an essay for Wikinewsies about them).

Anyway, one of the weaknesses of past reviews I've done for you has been that I didn't push through to uncover deep problems, instead stopping at the first major problem I encountered. I tried to do better this time; as a result, my latest review comments are fairly long. There's also, of course, the edits made during review. --Pi zero (talk) 13:41, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
