Welcome[edit]
Barbara Shack~enwikinews, welcome to Wikinews! Thank you for your contributions; I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Pope remarks article[edit]
hi, this news event - the Pope's comment and some of the reactions to it have been covered in several wikinews articles already. what u can do is report on any recent developments that have not recieved coverage on wikinews. i'll try to post a list of wikinews articles on this issue here, it might be of use. Doldrums 13:28, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Please tell me how to find out if something is covered by an existing article. I looked under, Pope but didn't find anything.Barbara Shack 13:30, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
here it is - (not in chron. order, i'm afraid)
- Pope Benedict XVI criticises Prophet Muhammad's teachings
- Muslim world condemns Pope's criticism of Islam
- Mujahedeen Army issues threat of attack on Vatican City
- Pope apologises in person for the reaction to his comments
- Nun murdered in Somalia after Pope's speech
- Pope Benedict apologizes for "sounding offensive" to Muslims
Doldrums 13:32, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
there's no sure-shot method, the things u can do are
- see if the entire issue fits in a topical Category, which u can look for at Wikinews:Browse/Topic and Special:Categories (eg. there's Category:Pope Benedict XVI)
- search for keywords relating to the story.
- once u've found one or two stories, then related stories will usually link to those, and u can find the related ones using the "What links here" link just below the search button (which is how i found most of these)
- look thro' Wikinews:Browse by period.
- ask someone.
Doldrums 13:39, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- In addition to all the places Doldrums has suggested you check for stories, you can check Special:Newpages, buuut I'd rather you risk creating a dupe than give you so many hoops to jump through that we discourage a new contributor. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:43, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Late edits[edit]
convention on Wikinews dictates that you don't edit articles that have been published for a few days unless it is minor edits like spelling and grammar. You should never add information and sources from significantly past the publish date as it interferes with the secondary purpose of Wikinews, to provide a historical archive of what was known at the time. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:33, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Prophet Mohammed cartoons article[edit]
hi, i've made some changes to the article, fixing some formatting according to the Wikinews:Style guide and also some copyediting/rewriting. i've commented out one statement as it does not appear to be borne out by the sources. if this is not the case, feel free to uncomment it or add other sources which do bear out the statement.
btw, i saw ur user page comment about trouble with duplicated articles, have the previous replies by me (and others) to ur query helped? feel free to contact me, anyone on Wikinews:Welcommittee or post to Wikinews:Water cooler/assistance if u need any more help. hoping ur Wikinews experience is getting better, —Doldrums (talk) 19:22, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Your account will be renamed[edit]
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Barbara Shack. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Barbara Shack~enwikinews that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
