Welcome[edit]

Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Thanks for the work on the Cornwall article, too. Dan100 (Talk) 14:39, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cueball, you removed somthing from the UK sailors captured at gunpoint by Iranians, saying that there is no source saying that the seizure was a reaction to increasing military in the gulf. The source says "The Iranians were bowled over by the appearance of the Charles de Gaulle opposite their southern coast, having assumed that Paris took issue with Washington’s tough stand on their nuclear activities and was seeking improved relations with Tehran.". So what is wrong? -- best wishes, Torsten 17:35, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mind if i move this discussion to the discussion page of the corresponding article? I'd like to know what others think about the question. -- Torsten 18:11, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unetical editing[edit]

By reverting my edits in this way refering to pov you bite yourself in the tail. Both the way of edit (reverting) and motivation (pov) you in an agerssivly way support your own pov in favour of storys development. this kind of behavour have some earlier contributors sadly showed and it dont make wikinews to a working community. international 20:31, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maby you should, as a new contributor, take a look at this. [1] and this "Avoid reverts and deletions whenever possible, and stay within the three-revert rule except in cases of clear vandalism. Explain reversions in the edit summary box." from [2]. Your recent type of editing make ppl leve WN to guys like you and it make WN to a forum for us pov, not a interseting newssource. Have fun then. international 22:21, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Independent review[edit]

Wikinews now requires all articles be independently reviewed by an WN:EDITOR and cannot be published or put on leads until such time as this has been done. I know, it probably wasn't like that when you got the old, old welcome template - so I updated it. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:15, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As I hope you noticed, this it main lead on the front page (at least, it is just now).

Everything that's published goes on the front page, and we've—regrettably—a low article count at the moment which means everything goes up as a lead for some time.

Your comment about working fast is what, for many people more-used to Wikipedia, is the hardest thing about Wikinews. You need to turn-around an article in a matter of hours ideally. Failing that and, taking 36-48 hrs or more on an article, it ideally needs to be more comprehensive than most mainstream sources. That's where Wikinews should excel, but there are few writers can push out good copy in those sort of timescales.

I note you've popped onto Wikinews irregularly over a few years; hopefully seeing what can be done here might encourage you to have a go more often. Odds are if you spot something you think deserves coverage at the weekend, you could push out an article here and there. It does get easier with practice. --Brian McNeil / talk 23:40, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
