A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Welcome to Wikinews, Dan23452767645. --Gryllida (chat) 23:10, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dan23452767645,

Thanks a lot for implementing the comments at the talk page of the article.

I added a couple new sections.

Please check. --Gryllida (chat) 00:14, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Did you mean to re-submit for review? It looks like it was submitted once but then moved back to {{develop}}. --Gryllida (chat) 02:23, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The dailypost source seems to be paywalled, if I am not mistaken it needs to be replaced with another source. Left a remark about this at the article talk page also. If I understand correctly, this needs to be fixed before submitting the story for review. --Gryllida (chat) 02:57, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This was a mistake, the source appears to be working. Added images, edited for past tense, and submitted for review. --Gryllida (chat) 03:35, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Must have fallen to sleep last night, thanks for sorting that out. My last edit was at 3am my time.

Re: Transport for Wales[edit]

Hello Dan23452767645,

This story is now {{stale}} as remarked in the last review. The issues raised were past tense in article body (fixed); headline in active voice and present tense (fixed); plagiarism and connection between different paragraphs (not fixed because it was too late to write by then). Some of these may help you with writing the next story.

It has in any case been a great pleasure to write together, by sharing suggestions and writing it into the article. :) Even though the article was not published, I am still glad about what we did.

I'm keen to keep looking for new developments in the area. As I am not strongly familiar with it however I may need your advice. Are there any particular news sources -- websites, TV or radio -- which you would recommend me to bookmark, about Wales or about transport in United Kingdom, which are more relevant and more interesting compared to others? I am hoping you could possibly share a part of your daily news reading list.

Cheers, --Gryllida (chat) 04:56, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Darn shame, too. Sorry, we have a work cycle like any other place! Any way you can back up, take a breath, and submit something fresh?? --Bddpaux (talk) 16:32, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comments. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. It's a shame that it wasn't done in time, but nevermind. It's not all lost however, I have learnt a lot about how to write good articles from it. I live in the UK if you hadn't guessed already, I'm also interested in the railways.
The railways are a pretty big part of the UK, as many of us use them for commuting and leisure, so they tend to be In all the major news outlets, I tend to go for the local sections of the BBC. For example the source articles I used were from the Wales part of the BBC.
I do have a quick question for either of you. I did not honestly think my Welsh rail article would get so far. To what extent would you consider an article to be news worthy, especially on a global scale?
Thanks,
Dan23452767645 (talk) 22:08, 24 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It was worthy on global scale. :-) We only didn't fix the plagiarism issues raised by reviewer (Pi zero) quickly enough -- within maximum 2-3 days after the event occurred. (WN:Fresh) --Gryllida (chat) 22:33, 24 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re: follow-up[edit]

Hi Dan23452767645 :)

Happy New Year! How are you? To follow up on our writing earlier, you are welcome to sign up at User:Gryllida/welcome a bit if you like. I am simply looking for testers to check that the message delivery is working correctly. The end aim is to assist newcomers with writing their articles, but simply testing that the system works from technical perspective would be greatly appreciated.

Re: welcome-a-bit[edit]

Hi Dan23452767645. :)

Thanks for signing up! I've set up the list page to get you started with the 'welcome-a-bit' message delivery. A few points:

  • Each line in this file includes a valid category name.
  • The script will see the list page automatically and start sending you messages.
  • This message delivery tool has bugs. They are best reported at its talk page, but I receive bugs anywhere -- by email or at my personal talk page -- and put them to this talk page. You get a small present for every bug reported. :)
  • If helping out newcomers, leave them messages on their personal talk pages (where they are easier to discover) or at article talk pages. As a personal recommendation, about 12-24 hours after they stop editing, or if they ask for help, start editing the article yourself.

Cheers, --Gryllida (talk) 20:50, 22 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Taking a look at your article, I saw some updates would be needed for publication at this point. (That can happen; the story keeps developing and if we happen not to get it reviewed lickety-split, it may lose freshness. Though of course the best solution in such a case would be if we did manage to get it reviewed lickety-split. :-) I did my best to find other difficulties at the same time, so we wouldn't risk fixing problems one at a time and having to go all around the review cycle yet again for each one, which would be hopelessly inefficient. Please see my review comments. I didn't make very many edits to the article on this review, but, on general principles, do take a look at the detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 20:32, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re: welcome-a-bit (March)[edit]

Hi Dan23452767645

It has been several weeks after you signed up for the 'welcome a bit' notification. Does it work for you? Did it help you with editing new drafts? Do you wish to continue receiving the notifications?

This month I have identified a bug in DynamicPageList extension, which prevents me from excluding archived articles from the initial results. This has been addressed by suppressing the first notifications continue to work as expected.

I see you may have received some notifications twice, in the case when one article belongs to two categories which are interesting to you. I hope to fix this by the end of this month.

Do you have any suggestions for improvement? Thanks, --Gryllida (talk) 04:49, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On March 17 the soil was given and burying completed: [1] [2] Unfortunately a bit too old news for today... If there are any new updates such as identification is completed (in about six months, they say), it could be a good follow up.

In any case thank you for writing the story. I have not heard of such an occurrence before.

Re: welcome-a-bit (April): Version 3 released[edit]

Hi Dan23452767645

Version 3 of the welcome-a-bit tool has been released. Now to remove obsoleted notifications from your personal talk page, you can add

importScript('User:Gryllida/js/wab-talk.js');

to Special:MyPage/common.js, and refresh your personal talk page. You will see a 'remove' button next to each section.

I saw you've blanked the list page, which unsubscribes you from all notifications. I am grateful to you for testing it out for several weeks. At your earliest convenience I would like to know why this occurred, and how the relevance of the new notifications could be improved to you or to others in the future. To reply please click here.

Have a wonderful day,

--Gryllida (talk) 00:03, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
