Where'd London go?[edit]

I notice that London no-longer has a temperature. This means that the map isn't much use for resisdents of Great Britain and Ireland as being islands, our weather is significantly different to that of the continent's. Dan100 (Talk) 21:20, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Weather on Spanish Wikinews[edit]

Hi. How are you going. The Weather map is terrific. I inserted it on the Spanish Wikinews. You can take a look to our Weather Template and the CurWeatherMapImage Template. I'd like to know how can we figure out when the Commons map is updated. Thanks a lot. Julianortega 02:35, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC) My Spanish Wikinews Discussion Page.

Layout issue - DV, that is really messed up. Can you fix it, or should I? - Amgine 00:08, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Just an idle question - I noticed you're regularly updating the graphics in all the various templates, which is great. But I wondered why you don't update the graphic at commons, keeping the same file name, which would obviate having to change all the graphic links? - Amgine 07:35, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

There is but one waerth[edit]

I am the real thing ;) I haven't seen anybody else use this name on the internet yet. I have been using it for about 4-5 years bow on a lot of differentboards and places. Before that I used waer and crazyman ..... on some older boards I still use those names. Unfortunately they were taken to often. Thats why I changed to waerth. All Waerths in wikimedia are me AFAIK. logo stuff.[edit]

(*snip)--copied from Meta:

As for restarting the vote, there only seems to be a dispute created by you and Christiaan, based largely on Dan100's pre-emptive attitude towards collaboration in favor of a rushed poll with little chance for anything more than "design by committee", which is a real shame. — DV 08:09, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for clearing that up. it appeared from the above conversation that there was an arbitrary enforcement of established rules. Instead it appears, there is instruction creep of the first order going on. Davodd | Talk 09:28, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

(different logo stuff)

We used to own an advertising company, and learned to live within deadlines. The "decision" for the final graphic/photo/language is never set in stone, but always being tweaked until the last second before printing/release - but you have to get the decision on which concept.

My reason for being opposed to late entries is the varied breakdowns in the decision process last time, which created a need for a runoff and, imo, completely flawed the results. If we must use a divisive process, we shouldn't allow cheating/rule breaking to make it unfair as well. - Amgine 14:15, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps we should leave the subject alone, but I figure if the community states rules regarding a: poll and one contravenes those rules, one is rulebreaking. True, for a good cause and to collaborate, but there is probably a reason for the rules such as to avoid acrimony or a confused/disputable outcome.
I won't make comments about the current series of design concepts, since they rather repeat the original poll, but I do think your later additions were good refinements of the original. (I still liked your clock concept, though perhaps without the 'C' which someone found objectionable.) - Amgine 18:31, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Could you perhaps make the last logo (the one I'm voting for) a bit larger, to match with the one it was derived from? See my latest comment on the vote page. - McCart42 03:11, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yes, if that version wins, of course I will supply a version at the standard size of 135px wide, a high-resolution version for printing, as well as a version with a transparent background for compositing on non-white skins. But Eloquence has asked me to hold off posting more logos until the vote is done, so I'll wait until then to generate and post them. — DV 05:12, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

NK story[edit]

Thanks for the lead! Looks like we've made a good start... Sj 09:11, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Between the two of you it became a great article - and a lightning rod! This lead article has been vandalized more than any other I've ever had the privileged to babysit. Good evidence of powerful writing. Thank you both. - Amgine 05:33, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I was asked to draw this up, along with other guidelines. I began implementing it. The reasoning is logical and straightforward: Wikinews is not an encyclopedia.

As described in What Wikinews is not, articles are not works-in-progress. They develop, are published, and then preserved as a resource. As the Content guide points out, "If something changes, don't edit an old article to update it: write a new one, and link to the old one for reference." Sources are differentiated in the Wikinews:Style guide because sources "may change, move, or be deleted, unlike References."

If these do not change your opinion, then the fact content edits of archived articles has occurred should at the very least give you pause. Clearly POV pushing has occurred in the archives, and some instances of it have been discovered. Imagine what might have occurred if Wikinews had gone live before the last election. Do you recall the POVing on Wikipedia during the election, to get "Wikipedia says" rights? Wikinews doesn't have the eyes to monitor the archives in the same way.

The philosophy has been: 1) only react to an actual problem, and 2) react in the least harmful manner possible. Preserving typos and misspellings is far less harmful than rewriting history. - Amgine 23:59, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yes, the convention says 2 weeks. There was a discussion to have it sooner, and later, and this was sort of the defacto middle ground. I have been waiting until 15 days, but mostly I want to work on the older ones (and add them to a 2004 archive set). I'm not too worried about archiving exactly on the minute an article hits two weeks. - Amgine 05:29, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Main page header[edit]

Thanks for the changes; easier on the eye.

I'd also like to apologise for my comments and behaviour to you during the logo selection process. The processwas a real learning experience for me. Dan100 (Talk) 10:04, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Chinese Wikinews[edit]

This is just so... wrong. I was really hoping that a Chinese Wikinews would be launched, but it looks like a lot of people have wimped out. If this goes to a Chinese-speaking community vote, there won't be a Chinese Wikinews. Why, oh why should we do what the ChiComs want? I'm sure in the event of a chinese block we could think of some way of getting around the Great Firewall. But as usual, people are weak and cowardly. What can ya do? --Ce garcon 06:27, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Mainpage[edit]

When I came in a few minutes ago, the main page layout was killed by the {{Weather}}, and I can't figure out why. I temp fixed by commenting out the template.

The template was very wide, the graphic dead (not missing). I'm still looking into what is wrong, but I thought I'd drop you a note immediately to tell you what is up. I'm about to check the other sites too. - Amgine 16:36, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Forgot to follow up... The new Romanian wikinews was trying to get their template to auto-update. Not sure that's possible, but you may wish to go look at what they've done... - Amgine 20:37, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

<nod> Thanks for clearing up what they were trying to do...
You didn't hear back about the text templates because I haven't gotten a definitive answer; and I let myself get distracted of course. I'll see if I can track that down now. - Amgine 20:52, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Just spoke with brion about it. It's not actually possible, because the templates are stored in the database and then parsed while the images are actually stored in files, and are therefore available directly. - Amgine 20:57, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Weather updates[edit]

Just in case I haven't said it recently: Thank you so much for maintaining the weather graphics! It's amazing how much traffic they appear to get, even if some people don't seem to realize how important and useful they are. - Amgine 17:26, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Database issues - Yes, I have observed one in the Abraham Lincoln story. But there have been *many* issues as the systems continue to be recovered/restored, and new hardware added in. The outage precipitated many upgrades/repairs, and it will be a couple of days at least before the system reaches equilibrium. - Amgine 22:19, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Would you mind ?[edit]

Would you mind restoring the following posts:
1. Liberalization of trade in oils and fats with Romania and Bulgaria in sight
2. Speech on receiving the Wadden Forum's final report

As I stated in the posts, these are press releases originating from the DUTCH GOVERNMENT (www.overheid.nl) and so released into the public domain !!! As long as the source is provided, but this is a very familliar way to put items on Wiki Media, see for example the Wiki Commons site with pictures released by the government. I can't help it that other organisations put it on their websites with a false claim of copyright.

As Vasquez is not realy such a common Dutch name, I don't blame you for having some trouble understanding Dutch. So trust me on this or learn Dutch.... hihi, good luck. --DantheMan 17:57, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
