Getting started as a contributor
|
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. | |
|
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Copied from Talk:Sanae Takaichi leads LDP to victory in 2026 Japanese election...
- Please check Who what where when why how (5W and H) - could you please add date to the first paragraph? And whether the election was held online or face to face; how many % of population attended; any other relevant answers to the 5W and H?
- Ideally these are answered briefly in the first paragraph; see inverted pyramid; and expanded in more detail in following paragraphs.
Hope this is helpful. I am open to discussion!

Closing and archiving discussions at DR
Please note that typically, administrators close discussions at WN:DR (this is implied at the top, under the section titled "Admins"). The specific discussion for Wikinews:Deletion requests#Muhammad Qasim Observational case report on late-onset hair regrowth published, medical review invited was not open for the minimum seven days before it was closed and immediately archived. The last post in that discussion was meant to leave space and time for further evaluation of the deletion if warranted.
Thank you for all of the housekeeping work you've been doing recently with archiving similar content. Please be careful to follow policies, guidelines, and norms. When in doubt, a quick post asking if anyone objects to a thread closure is better than quickly closing and archiving off-page.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 20:39, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
- I know, but there were many discussions left open for a long time, and there shouldn't be any issue in me just adding templates to discussions where the outcome had already been determined/enforced. You can see that I left those that weren't alone. Sorry, I had naturally assumed that deletion would be the end of the discussion. At Wikipedia, no deletion discussion would be left open after the page has been deleted, but I suppose there is less rush here. I'll take your advice into mind, thanks! Message about JN election story
"Hi @HKLionel could you please confirm that it is fine to remove these tables for publishing, or confirm that you are comfortable providing the sourcing in the format that @Michael.C.Wright requested (notes which part of source which item is from). I believe providing automatically translated copy of the source to scoop
wn-reporters.org is fine too. Do you have time to do this today?" was posted on article talk page, please check it out. Thanks. Gryllida 02:08, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
- update: i just removed that material, until the reviewer query is met, it should stay out. unfortunately I am not able to review as i am busy this week and most of next week. personally i would not have required that effort and i would have tried to read that source myself.
- update 2: related discussion at Wikinews:Water_cooler/policy#Proposed_article_talk_guideline may be helpful i.e., I would be very interested to know your input thanks Gryllida 02:14, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay, I believe I've addressed & replied to everything here. HKLionel TALK 01:40, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
streak proposal
Hi, I am proposing to setup w:streak goals over a 12 week period: for example,
- "write one story each two weeks, and babysit it until it is published"
This could be either authoring a completely new article or this could be taking over someone else's article and doing focused editing on it with active collaboration with others until it is published. It is like a day shift as you are expected to remain available 'on call' to address concerns from another user or reviewer.
The aim of this is to build a habit of participation with outbursts of eyeballing the page to collaborate with others -- but not every day, to have breaks and reduce burnout. Could you please check out at this section and let me know what you think? Gryllida 03:15, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- Sounds great, thanks! HKLionel TALK 02:05, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
Trump article
That article has grown quite stale and you’ve listed it on your User page as well. Any actions planned to freshen up and re-submit?—Bddpaux (talk) 00:21, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
- I'm sorry the article failed -- it was a stellar attempt! Back up, take a breath -- and go again. There is PLENTY of news out there.--Bddpaux (talk) 22:43, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
Take a look...
