Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hello from Gryllida

[edit]

Hi @Md Mobashir Hossain

Would you be interested in joining as a reviewer? If you were, I or another reviewer of your interest would be doing it together with you for the first several months to assist.

Similarly, would you be interested in helping with page deletions and blocking users, and removing vandalism. Is this something you have done before and do you have an interest?

Are there any changes to the workflow that you would consider helpful?

Are you on any IM platform such as Discord, Linphone (SIP), Matrix, where we could exchange messages, screenshots, and sometimes audio calls?

Regards, - Gryllida 21:04, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hey, I want to be a reviewer. Please, chat on telegram (as I am connected with all wikimedians there.)

Community response to SPTF's recommendation to close Wikinews

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Sister Projects Task Force (SPTF) has issued a recommendation to close Wikinews. A community response to the Task Force is underway and I believe it's critical that we show clear support from contributors, reviewers, and administrators if we want Wikinews to remain open.

If you believe Wikinews still has potential for revitalization and should remain active, I ask that you:

  • Review and help improve the draft community response, and/or
  • Add your endorsement once you're comfortable with the language

The goal is to finalize the draft before the July 16 Task Force call, so our response is ready for consideration.

You can find the draft here: 👉 Wikinews:Response to Proposal for Closing Wikinews

Thanks for considering. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:51, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Live chat software trial

[edit]

Live chat software trial (August-September 2025)

Hi, i am running a software to make live chat easier to use. It requires installation of QuasselDroid on Android, Quassel Client on Windows or Mac or Linux, and I don't know what on iOS (let me know if this is your main platform). The software would connect you to the official IRC channel for Wikinews and stay connected including all chat history, including when you closed the app. I am achieving this by hosting it on my Quassel Core on my server. If you are interested in trying this option, please install the Quassel Client software, and after this is done (not before), ensure you have a working email in your Special:Preferences so i can email you login credentials, and specify your desired IRC nickname. Please note this is open source software with low bandwidth usage and the communication is only via text, so it is not privacy invasive. This platform is older than the web, irc existed since 1980s. Thanks. Gryllida 22:08, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Here's an idea

[edit]

I see that you nominated yourself to be an Admin here (Sysop) -- and I think you are now a Reviewer (not sure). Try this on: Would you like to engage as a Reporter as well? It isn't complicated (for the most part). You can do synthesis articles and Original reporting. We'll make you famous!!😁 --Bddpaux (talk) 20:38, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I am voicing a few comments here (please do not take this as some type of attack or what-have-you). Ours is an interesting project. We have: Contributors, Accredited Reporters, Administrators, Bureaucrats, etc. around here. "Administrator" is kind of a funny thing here. We do a lot of stuff to keep this place tidy'd up. Some come here (they spend 97% of their time on other WMF projects), do a bit or two, and then we don't see them again for 4 months. Others do virtually no reporting/reviewing, but do all sorts of work with code, appearance, flow etc. -- and those are some very important actions. What often happens around here is that people come here, do some stuff, do a little more stuff THEN they/someone nominates them for a position -- and people voice reluctance: and then they vanish from this project. I've seen it 500 times -- and I just hate to see that. Credibility here is earned. One of our hallmarks is: Don't assume good faith. It can be easy to get offended around here -- it's happened to me. I hope you're not offended. Please come back. Look around. Edit a bit. Check up on a few things. Loads of interesting changes are afoot around this place. There are no paychecks here. There are no expense accounts. But -- we can promise a pinch (and barely that) of GLORY!! Hope to see your around here soon!--Bddpaux (talk) 21:16, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Somehow, we missed this!

Published. Congratulations.

Reviewer left following comment:

1) MINOR EDIT REQUESTED: Article is, while written as objectively as possible, dominated by points of view of the opposition. I strongly recommend adding point of view of the current ruling party about this event. Please do so within next 12 hours or less, and mention my nick in the edit summary so that I can sight the edit.

Thanks. -- Gryllida 22:42, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
