Welcome[edit]

RHakeem, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!

Please find some way to prove you are the author of the image you have uploaded. Perhaps by email an Administrator. --Brian McNeil / talk 15:57, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Preferably email mailto:permissions@wikimedia.org mentioning the image name, and that you're on the english wikinews. Or instead, you can upload to commons: and follow their procedures for images which you have permission for. (Commons is prefered, as then other projects, such as wikinews in other languages, or wikipedia, etc can also easily use it too). Bawolff 01:22, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

image[edit]

I see you uploaded Image:NWFP-FATA Map.JPG, but yet it isn't used in any articles. Are you planning to use it in one in the future? (If so, I'd also like to ask if you happen to have a version of the map in png or svg, as jpg (which it is currently) doesn't work well with maps as it leaves ugly compression artifacts. Also if there was a version without the url in the background, it'd be better as the url sort of makes you dizzy, and looks kind of tacky in my opinion (no offense intended). Happy editing. I have spent quite some time tracking down the history of this image. As far as I can re construct it this is how it came about:

The Election commission of Pakistan generated it and so the boundaries are political districts (counties) - later it was used by the World Food Program. I obtained it from the site of Khyber.org under their maps subheading. This is the only place where it currently exists other than my website which is the url you mentioned. What Khyber.org did was they put their "stamp" on it, so you will see a "waterstamp" in all the blank spaces saying "khyber.org" - I happpen to know the person that runs that site, but he is not responding probably because he knows he does not own the image.

Being a newbie that leaves the following questions a) Can I use the image? b) That waterstamp is really annoying, and I would like some advice on how to remove it/them. c) Regarding your question, yes I do have software to convert it to a .png d) I can delete the url, no problem.

Please advise where do we go from here. Yes I plan on using it in my article once its bona fide's are established here. --RHakeem 15:30, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I made a change to the image to demonstrate that the watermark can be layered away. Does the Pashtun Foundation allow derivative uses of maps found their web pages? -Edbrown05 06:28, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on the map. Some maps are uploaded by other members and I do not know their source(s) but this particular one - Yes! I still don't know how to do the layering. I have uploaded a PNG version and will let you all help me with the "layering". --RHakeem 16:50, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shortcuts[edit]

Hey, would you mind adding the shortcuts you create to WN:WN? Thanks!  Thunderhead  ►  16:39, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
