Welcome, YesItIsMe! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems. All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours. Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

Places to go, people to meet Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Write your first article for Wikinews! Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it! It is recommended you read the article guide before starting. Also make sure to check the list of recently created articles to see if your story hasn't already been reported upon.

Logic

Were you what you claim, your next move would be to safely establish your identity with us; and you'd not need us to spoon-feed you instructions on how. Were you not what you claim, you'd be a site vandal who ought to be blocked. So the obvious solution —that works whether you are what you claim, or not— is to block you until such time as you establish your identity with us. Done. --Pi zero (talk) 09:24, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Credential verification

Hi. I have not heard anything from four of the active wikinews admins / accredited reporters / admins that I am in contact with regarding your credentials. Nothing has come through the mailing list suggesting that your credentials have been independently verified (with out disclosing who you are and thus maintaining your anonimity). Can you tell me who has verified your credentials at Wikinews? Also, can you remove the word accredited from your user page? It has a very specific meaning on English Wikinews, and would be on par with claiming to be an administrator even though you are not. In any case, the important part is: Who at Wikinews has verified your credentials? Who has reviewing rights have you contacted and has agreed to independently verify your original reporting notes that are not available on the talk page? --LauraHale (talk) 07:50, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

LauraHale, I can communicate with you off-wiki concerning off-wiki measures taken to verify YIIM's identity (in general terms), and what measures could have been taken toward publication; we'd been leaving you out of the loop partly on the theory it'd let you enjoy your vacation. YIIM has not been forthcoming with notes, which rules out direct OR; something else might possibly have been arranged, but would have been more difficult on our end and was not readily arrangeable on the spur of the moment. Moreover, YIIM's remarks on the article talk suggest xe is no longer interested in publication at Wikinews, and we've been operating on that premise since. --Pi zero (talk) 11:20, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

I do take the point, btw, that YIIM is apparently still interested in publication since xe has resubmitted for publication; however, there has indeed been a breakdown of communication concerning what is needed. This is probably because, owing to YIIM's desire to minimize publicly visible evidence, most of the discussions that have taken place concerning authentication, verification, and publication have taken place sub rosa. And, as I say, the arrangements were not going well and stopped when YIIM appeared to say xe didn't want to publish here after all. --Pi zero (talk) 11:26, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Oh, one other point I'd better make here. The notes aren't the only reason we can't do this as direct OR; it's one of two reasons. The other is that we simply do not, and will not, know enough about YIIM's identity. The on-wiki role referred to as as "original reporter" (a term of art) entails trust, which is an intuitive thing, and intuition requires lots of information to work with; here our information flow about YIIM is stopped down to a trickle — for perfectly understandable reasons, but it does mean we don't have enough for intuition to work with. --11:54, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
