To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems. All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours. Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

Places to go, people to meet Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Write your first article for Wikinews! Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it! It is recommended you read the article guide before starting. Revision requested: United States capture Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro (January 4)

Rewrite is requested:

1) Please specify date, and time zone, in first paragraph.

2) New York Times source is paywalled. Please remove it along with any information from it. If you wish to keep that information, please find another source for it.

3) Some sentences may require attribution. I was shocked to read the phrase " conspiracy to commit narco‐terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine". Is it official accusation? The 'narco-terrorism' is a new word for me. If it was official accusation, then maybe it could be either wikilinked or taken into quotation marks.

4) Article body needs to be written in past tense.

5) Phrases like 'where Maduro was suspected to be located' and 'seizure of several oil tankers' are plagiarised and need to be written in your own words, if Earwig is to be believed.

6) Please double-check the chronology of writing corresponds to inverted pyramid to reduce revision required by reviewer at time of approval.

Please revise and re-submit for review NOW while the news is still fresh.

Let me explain: the article has a basis, yes, but this is just a quick post. If you want to delve deeper, Wikipedia is the ideal place. Also, comparing all the sources isn't the right approach; it would just add too much unnecessary information.--~2026-80852 (talk) 22:02, 4 January 2026 (UTC)

I did not understand the discussion about Wikipedia. They do write about events but they do it differently: they keep adding new details every day because it is an encyclopedia. In Wikinews, a report is about what was known at time of publishing only because it is a news site. Hope it helps to see the difference. Gryllida 22:16, 4 January 2026 (UTC)

reviewer left comments:

1) as discussed at the talk page I have had to restore a previous revision which contains the propaganda from both sides (US and the local countries in southern America)

2) i had to add attribution/source 'US President said that ...' to first paragraph to clarify where info came from in case it was fake.

i recommend following ADDITONAL edits please do them immediately:

1) merge with the other page to be done within next 12 hours please

2) comment about the president wife having also been captured as i believe this is also the case but headline and first paragraph do not quite mention this i believe
