In route from Ahmedabad, India to London, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane crashed shortly after takeoff. A large explosion occurred. 241 people died in the plane. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a citizen of Great Britain, who was in seat 11A in front of the plane's left wing, has survived and was admitted to hospital with "non-critical" injuries.

An additional at least 49 people have died as they were in a hostel which the airplane crashed into.
Ramesh told BBC a thunderous sound echoed 30 seconds after take-off. The airline reported there were 169 people from India, 53 from Great Britain, seven from Portugal and one from Canada.
Vishwash's brother in the adjacent seat did not survive. Vishwash was on his way to UK from Leicester, England where he visited his family.
