Request to archive articles

I think it is safe to archive all articles that pre-date our copyright license upgrade, which is all published articles preceding and including Actress Selena Gomez announces engagement to record producer Benny Blanco. Doing so will leave seven articles listed in our "Latest news" section on the main page. Whoever archives them, please remember to use {{Archived-cc-2.5}} to reflect the old CC version.

This will also allow us to close another action item in the Wikinews:2024 Copyright license upgrade project.

Thank you in advance. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 15:57, 29 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We now have more than ten articles published after the license upgrade project. The project occurred on December 16 and no articles were published that day. Therefore everything from Actress Selena Gomez announces engagement to record producer Benny Blanco and before, that is not already archived, can be archived using {{Archived-cc-2.5}}. After that is done, normal archiving can proceed using {{Archived}}. Please let me know if there are any questions regarding the unique archive process.
The list of "Latest news" on our main page is growing very long, with more than half the articles in the list published last year. Archiving articles will remove them from that list. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 18:07, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael.C.Wright You're OK with this being done by the bot, right? Leaderboard (talk) 04:08, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking through this just now and thought of an alternative idea. The goal at the moment is to reduce the number of articles listed in the Latest news section on the main page. Maybe we come up with an additional Wikinews:Article stage tags such as {{Current news|pub_date={{subst:CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} }} that can be managed by a bot on a scheduled basis. For example, the bot runs every 24 hours and searches for articles published pub_date=X+7D and it then adds those pages to an internal, hidden category such as Category:Past coverage or Category:Stale published and our DPL on the main page can be edited to exclude those categories in the Latest news section.
That would at least address the immediate problem of a long list of old articles in the Latest news section while we figure out our official archival procedures, for which I have an idea not-yet proposed.
What are your thoughts on that. Can that be done relatively painlessly on your side? Alternatively, I was about to recommend we archive stable-only, published articles and add them to Category:Archived-bot in order to track them for later, post-archival review.
Related, I just found we have a {{Latest news}} and there appears to be a lot of old discussions around it that might (or might not) help inform us here. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:54, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael.C.Wright Ultimately, it is not clear to me why all this post-processing work is needed - can't the bot just auto-archive articles after three weeks of no edits, for instance? In other words, I'm not seeing the need for "later, post-archival review". Leaderboard (talk) 17:37, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I assume the original intent was 'thoroughness' and quality of the final product. I tend to agree with you, but if we follow Chesterton's fence, we should probably work with it until we can get it formally changed. Given that so few admin enjoy or actually want to do the archival, I don't think that will be hard. Feel free to jump in here as well: Wikinews:Water_cooler/proposals#Update to archival process. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 18:55, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think human doing it is because there may be technical issues like missing images or accidentally sighted vandalism. This is why this could be good to semi automate it. Like the 'make lead' gadget. List of articles which require archival, possible to tick boxes next to each of them and click 'archive'. (Then up to responsible admin to figure out how to click each article link and proofread or check). Gryllida (talk) 09:36, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Someone please give me a list of what needs to be archived, and how to do it. I can do it now. Gryllida (talk) 09:27, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The list and procedures are both at WN:Archive. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 13:19, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I archived this one. This involved me sighting my own edits. Does what I did look correct? If yes, then I will proceed to archive the others. Please let me know. Gryllida (talk) 19:41, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My main reference for archiving is SVTCobra’s approach, which includes retrieving archive URLs for sources (and likely forcing an archive if needed). You can see examples here:[1], [2], [3], [4].
The changes you made to the article could be done quickly by a bot. This isn’t a critique of your work—it’s the core of the discussion. Do we want to keep a tedious, unpopular archival process, or simplify it so a bot can handle most of the work? —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 22:13, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Someone needs to agree how to do it. Manually doing several may help for this. It may also help (for now) with reducing vandalism.
  • Someone can simplify it if they want. I recommended semi-automated with a list of articles with tick boxes next to them and an archive button. This would be in JavaScript and edits would be made from name of the admin who is using the gadget. Would you use such a gadget?
  • Would you like to implement it, or someone else, or would you like me to do it?
Gryllida (talk) 20:28, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Would you like to implement it, or someone else, or would you like me to do it? If you are asking me that, I won't be able to, as I'm not an admin.
Part of what I have proposed here is to change the archive process so that after 24 hours, article are protected to a level where reviewers can still edit them and can help with the archival process. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:34, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:18, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's fine to fully automate as long as there is a tracking category to clear manually after archival. This would solve issues with spam/vandalism to articles which were already published, while still leave human viewing archived articles for unexpected issues. My apologies for the recent deletions of broken redirects. I didn't think about the local policy when deleting them and will do my best to follow the policy for global sysops in the future. Ternera (talk) 02:32, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know – any chance the GS policy on this wiki can be updated to spam, vandalism and other uncontroversial maintenance? I would've deleted them myself saving some time for others had the policy permitted for GS deletions other than spam/vandalism. --SHB2000 (talk) 05:39, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Gryllida sorry didn't ping correctly the first time. Leaderboard (talk) 06:04, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ternera, thanks for helping with maintenance tasks!
When we opted in, there were specific restrictions[9] mentioned by Cromium one of our local, semi-retired amins: My feeling on restrictions is that global sysops should only delete pages that clearly fall under criteria A3, A6 or R4 on Wikinews:Criteria for speedy deletion.
SHB2000, I personally fall on the side of 'more help is welcome' and tend to agree that we could expand the policy to include uncontroversial maintenance. But we'd have to define that. I propose we permit the following as uncontroversial, especially when already flagged using {{Delete}} by a Wikinews editor: A7, A9, A10, R1 (the case above), R3, G1, and G6 (all from our Wikinews:Criteria for speedy deletion policy).
It is my opinion that the more help we get for maintenance tasks the better. We have so few active admin as it is. More help from GS could also free up local admin time for other tasks such as protected edit requests and article archival, two desperately needed and often despised-by-admin tasks. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 15:39, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be more flexible and essentially open things up to GS discretion. It can be made clear in the rules that global sysops should not delete articles without very good reasons, but I don't think it's needed to "tie down" GS to a few set criteria. Leaderboard (talk) 18:02, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would assume what was originally intended was to prevent global sysops from touching existing articles, which I agree should be left to the local community. --SHB2000 (talk) 22:51, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm open to allowing GS more discretion on what they're allowed to do here. I'm probably not the best person to ask about the specifics here, I'm infinitely averse to wikipolitics, but I'd support it in principle Ash Thawley (talk) (calendar) 21:43, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello
  • Deleting broken redirects is uncontroversial.
  • But local admins can handle it. Unlike vandals or spammers, it doesn't pile up as quickly.
  • In light of the pros and cons arguments above, I personally have neutral position about it.
  • What else is the subject of this discussion?
Regards, -- Gryllida (talk) 00:39, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Leaderboard that we can be more trusting with the GS. I am not aware of any problems beyond the one mentioned by Cromium here. That was eight months ago and early in our acceptance of help. I mentioned specific restrictions in anticipation of others wanting the same but I'm more happy opening it up to GS discretion, as that could result in broader help. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:40, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael.C.Wright @SHB2000 @Gryllida @Ternera
I haven't seen any opposition to the proposal, and hence updated Wikinews:Global_permissions accordingly. I've deliberately not defined "uncontroversial maintenance", because I don't see the need to, and I believe that global sysops are capable enough of determining what should be left to local admins. Leaderboard (talk) 06:46, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers, Leaderboard. :) --SHB2000 (talk) 07:03, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This is not a complaint, but a heads-up for Global Sysops: our date categories are intentionally created in advance and may remain empty until their date passes. They are used to track and organize published articles. On March 11, the empty category for March 31 was deleted [10]. We use User:Asked42/QuickCat at the start of each month to create all date categories, and pages are assigned via the {{Date}} template when it is added to articles.
The deleted category was easily recreated—no issue there. Just wanted to flag this for awareness. Thanks again for your support! —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 17:38, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Michael.C.Wright Can the bot do that (archiving), to be clear? I didn't get consensus the last time. Leaderboard (talk) 01:54, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should proceed with archiving using the bot for now and add all bot-archived articles to the hidden, internal Category:Archived-bot so we can track them and go back and re-review them if that is the consensus.
Are you able to set it up with the following conditions?
  • Maintain roughly ten articles unarchived (to keep a list in Latest news)
  • Flagged revision is stable (stablepages=only)
  • Article published 7+ days ago
We have some conversations about this spread around, so for anyone wanting to follow along:
Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:15, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael.C.Wright The bot is currently set up in such a way that it will archive published articles whose last edit has been three weeks or older. Would that work on its own? Leaderboard (talk) 16:22, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It will certainly cover many articles. However, our current archival process does not require three weeks of inactivity, and that metric can be skewed by vandalism—it wouldn’t have prevented the vandalism that led to this particular discussion.
If it's too difficult to change the bot from the current configuration of 3+ weeks of no changes, then in the interest of getting something done, I say we proceed. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:29, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Leaderboard Is your goal with the 3+ weeks to be careful and mindful of the lack of consensus and the fact that it's a new process? —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:31, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael.C.Wright Kind of yes - setting a balance while ensuring that there's enough articles in the main page as well. I just chose the easiest technical option at that time. Leaderboard (talk) 17:26, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think it'll do in a pinch. As long as we also add the articles to Category:Archived-bot for easy retrieval and later-review, we should be okay. I'd say we're well within the bounds of WN:IAR on this and we have a proposed alternative to the currently-dysfunctional process. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 20:14, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
good idea to have a tracking category thanks. can we have another cat for after human checked that archival went ok? maybe human can move from archived-bot cat to archived cat if there are no issues. Gryllida (talk) 08:29, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Human removal of the Category:Archived-bot should suffice. Adding a new category is extra work, an extra step in an already unpopular process, is something new to learn, etc. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 13:41, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have a few issues with the above. The "2025 Boost publication rate" is a personal project and there is no need to put it up as the end goal of the project. There is no need to "Should Wikinews start publishing audio news? Comment and vote", this is something that should just be done as soon as someone has an opportunity. I don't like the 'Help revitalize Wikinews' topic as it means the user should not read the other discussions at the water cooler and stay subscribed; it also creates a sense that the wiki is dying rather than encouraging users to contribute for the sake of engaging in news writing. I don't see a need to add any markup, there is too much markup work for newbies already. The proposal for archiving articles was already resolved as leaderbot already started doing the job.

How about we make a page like User:Gryllida/Contribute and suggest this version:

Gryllida, RockerballAustralia, George Ho, Michael.C.Wright, Bddpaux, JJLiu112 Thanks Gryllida (talk) 21:19, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The proposal for archiving articles was already resolved as leaderbot already started doing the job. Leaderbot is not doing the job. There are currently 200 articles that are in cat:published and not in cat:archived. I believe Leaderboard is waiting to better-understand the need for a manual archival process in the first place. No archiving appears to be taking place manually or otherwise.
I don't like the 'Help revitalize Wikinews' topic as it means the user should not read the other discussions at the water... That’s not what it says at all. What it does say is: "Help revitalize Wikinews. Join the discussion at Project proposal for 2025."
[I]t also creates a sense that the wiki is dying... It is—and that’s evident from our declining publication rate, dwindling user activity, and reduced engagement from reviewers and admins alike. This has been a long-term trend, and we won’t reverse it by pretending otherwise or clinging to the status quo of "someone will get to it eventually." Given how few articles we publish each month, it’s hard to argue we’re functioning as a reliable news source.
I don't see a need to add any markup, there is too much markup work for newbies already. What markup work already exists?
The "2025 Boost publication rate" is a personal project... It’s clear that both supporters and those who contributed ideas see things differently. I’m stepping back—I’ve said my piece about the problem and offered help, but I’m no longer trying to persuade anyone that big changes are needed around here.

Edit request for Main page

I have made an edit request at Template talk:Main headlines#Edit request count=10. Details can be found there. Thank you in advance. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:29, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Global sysop or local admin edit request: Template:Main headlines and Wikinews:Social media

We have at least two pages that mention @wikinews as our Twitter account, but that account now belongs to someone else. I believe our actual X account is @enwikinews (https://x.com/enwikinews), to which we currently don't have access (0 followers and 0 posts).

Can a global sysop (Ternera?) or local admin remove the X link and any mention of our X account name from both Template:Main headlines and Wikinews:Social media until we sort it all out? Whoever controls @wikinews can post whatever they want to X and we link to it as if it is us. This could present a liability issue.

I will look for more mentions/links to this account. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:25, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I would be happy to update the social media links, but I'm only supposed to use sysop tools for obvious spam or vandalism as a GS. Ternera (talk) 14:46, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. I forgot about those restrictions. This probably also doesn't fall under "other uncontroversial maintenance" either. Thanks for the quick response though! I've pinged a couple of admin who are signed in to IRC as well. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:55, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Michael.C.Wright
I've fixed something like that recently, if something wasn't fixed please let me know.
Didn't get any IRC pings.
I created template {{ping-assistance-required-sysop}} which can be placed anywhere urgent; alas, I don't get new Echo notifications when a 'Protected Page Edit Is Needed' template (whatever it is named) is placed on article talk, and for some fancy reason I don't always get notifications for this page either despite being subscribed to it.
Regards, -- Gryllida (talk) 21:26, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Having a notification "3 new topics at AAA" is a bit stupid. In no circumstances I'm going to handle all 3 new topics at once. It would be nice to have that grouping option switched off. Added phab:T390635 and phab:T390637. Regards, -- Gryllida (talk) 22:47, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am able to click on summary notices such as "3 replies to topic X" and it will take me to topix X and highlight all three new messages. I can also click an arrow to expand the summary notice and see three individual notices of each reply, allowing me to click on each one individually, to go to the topic and see the individual reply highlighted.
I'm not sure if that is a feature I have enabled in preferences, but I don't believe so. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 00:06, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. (Thanks for pointing it out.) Genuinely uncomfortable and not accessible to anyone who has even slightest visual impairment. At least the Special:Notifications page has it not tiny. Gryllida (talk) 12:39, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request to update Sitenotice

There are three parts to this request.

1. Remove the following: (XXX Fix link). It’s unclear why it was added, but it should not appear in the production version.

2. Update message 1 to congratulate contributing editors of monthly top article, by name.

3. Remove the recommendation to follow us on social media. We are not currently active on any platforms and may not have access to the accounts being promoted.

I have implemented these changes below.

Note: The select count should be 11 because the first message starts at 0.

BigKrow has been posting spammy crap on my talk page last few days. Now they are accusing me of being User:Me Da Wikipedian, as well as User:BigKrow2. I asked BigKrow several times to provide evidence, or a basis, and they gave me nothing. BigKrow asked me to "prove my innocence," but I don't know how to do that. The allegations are severe -- I'm concerned. Lofi Gurl (talk) 21:28, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
me too, something needs to be done. @Gryllida, @Lofi Gurl BigKrow (talk) 21:33, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing will be done unless you have like, actual evidence I'm this user. You're wasting everyone's time otherwise. Lofi Gurl (talk) 21:36, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
there is 'ignore groundless accusations' guideline at this site, so if accusations are pointless, they may be left without reply or removed from a talk page as a first response; if they repeat and continue to be a time waste then further action may be taken. this may help whoever is being accused. as to whoever is accusing: please don't add groundless accusations. hope it helps. Gryllida (talk) 21:39, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Instead of just asking for the troll/impersonator accounts to be checked, this user instantly escalated the situation and caused disruption by trying to tie these accounts to me, and then backed out when asked to present evidence or a basis. This user has been severely irritating me lately and has been making contributing here slightly toxic. But the baseless socking allegations crossed a line in my book. Lofi Gurl (talk) 21:59, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Lofi Gurl please post here if the baseless socking allegations resume. i think it is pretty clear from the discussion above that these baseless socking allegations need to stop, in a hope that this request will succeed and the discussions will go back to normal. does/did this help? Gryllida (talk) 23:12, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Acagastya Thanks. Looks like nothing more to do about that one.
Do you think anything should be done about the so-called 'groundless accusations' between 'Lofi Gurl' and 'BigKrow' involving implied sockpuppeting from a user who was blocked last year?
Regards, -- Gryllida (talk) 10:06, 21 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

┌─────────────┘
I have no stake in this, but it’s worth noting that the two appear to have resolved their differences: User_talk:Lofi_Gurl#I_suffer_from_bad_mental_health_issues. In the absence of formal guidance on en.WN, our first step before considering action for "groundless accusations" should be to define a clear SPI process. Also, some grounds were presented at User_talk:Lofi_Gurl—I’m not assessing their merit, only noting that they exist.

BigKrow, for future reference, we do have a page with guidance on how to request CheckUser functions here: Wikinews:Requests for CheckUser. A CheckUser has the ability to estimate if an account is likely a sock puppet. In a request such as yours above, that is likely your best course of action. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 17:32, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio correction needed in edit protected article

The article "Nuclear negotiations between US and Iran commence in Muscat, Oman" includes multiple instances of verbatim and near-verbatim copying from sources, including an entire sentence. As the article is edit-protected, an administrator will need to correct the issue.

These problems were identified several days before the review and were even explicitly highlighted by the publishing reviewer [20]; however, neither the article's contributors nor the reviewer addressed them, and the copied content the reviewer highlighted was published.

This is not an isolated case. I previously removed copied content from the published article "Explosion in Iran's largest port, Shahid Rajaee, heard 50 km away, leaves dozens killed, thousands injured" [21] before it too was edit-protected. This follows the explicit publication of plagiarized content in "Competitive local elections held in England."

As noted at Water cooler: Reaffirming Core Policies, these actions violate core policies and undermine our credibility.

All three articles were published by the same reviewer, who has stated they "do not verify everything in all instances" and that this "may or may not be problematic." [22] It is now safe to say it is demonstrably problematic.

The same reviewer has also recently posted to Wikinews:Water cooler/assistance asking, "What is acceptable copyvio % for article to be legally accepted as CC licence which is used at Wikinews?" [23], which reflects either a concerning lack of understanding of, or a disregard for core reviewer responsibilities and long-standing Wikinews policies, guidelines, and norms.

Plagiarism is an existential threat to our legitimacy as a news project. If we do not address this clearly and decisively, we risk further erosion of trust from contributors, readers, and the Wikimedia movement at large. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 21:39, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Michael.C.Wright
1. I am looking at the copyvio report with a confused face. Several quotes, and the "Araghchi had said ahead of the discussions that his country wanted a "fair agreement". said his country is not seeking war, nor a nuclear bomb. Representatives of both countries described the meeting as "constructive" and confirmed a second round of discussions will take place next week" part, are flagged as plagiarism. I can either remove these two sentences completely, or reword them, and add a correction. I chose the "reword and add a correction". You're now welcome to sight the edit.
2. I identified these issues and asked another contributor to fix them. I would appreciate if you figured out who that contributor was, and left them a message at their talk page. (This does not diminish responsibility of reviewer to be vigilant, but it is an important additional action I am suggesting.) I think it would be appropriate given that you are highly concerned about the outcome, that not only the reviewer, but also the user also knows.
3. No further action required.
4. No further action required.
5. No further action required (short of aiming to avoid it in future). I'm noting that the review was done two days before I added earwig copyvio checker to the 'review' and 'developing' templates. While in 'developing' template this works consistently and the link shows, I find that in the 'review' template the link is missing half of the time. This means that, to review, I click 'edit', change 'review' to 'develop', click 'Publish changes', click 'Show Preview' (please, find that person who made it two clicks to Preview instead of one, and ask them to be sentences to clicking two clicks instead of one click for every click remaining in their life - this is a disastrous UI decision), click the earwig link, close the 'save edit' dialog, press Esc, confirm i wanna discard the edit, and then proceed to read the copyvio report in new tab. At least the link should show in the 'review' template every time consistently, not half of the time. It would be nice to get that fixed. The link helps me a lot and would help even more if it worked. [Not that I am avoiding using it if it's missing, now, but reducing this pain would be nice.]
6. Discussion caused result 'reword and quote brightest part of the quote, not whole thing'. I have put it in my notes for what to request for requested revisions. No further action required from there currently, other than fixing the technical issue from item 5, as it makes it harder to provide such feedback. Still it is much better than on April 21 and earlier, when the copyvio checker link wasn't there!
7. That's not an actionable sentence, no action required.
Please let me know if there is anything else remaining in the to-do. Gryllida (talk) 11:19, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The full list of articles I have added edit requests to for copyvio is below. I only checked the articles published in April. There may be more. One suggested action by the reviewer would be to check the articles they have published so far this month as well.
Please also note that since they are edit-protected, only an admin can sight changes. Whoever corrects the copyvio, re-checks with Earwig, and issues the correction should self-sight their changes to immediately remove the copyvio/plagiarism from the published article. Otherwise it remains intact. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 15:29, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael.C.Wright which of articles are still in need of action? some are already tagged Gryllida (talk) 19:41, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Found 3 that still don't have a correction on them. Took the oldest and revised it. Despite the software limitation not allowing you to sight the edits, I propose that you read them anyway and leave a note here to the effect of 'Yay' or 'Nay', then I will sight them. I hope it is OK. I will proceed to edit the other articles when I have a next moment at the computer as I am currently busy. I will keep you updated. Thank you for your time and attention to this. Regards, -- Gryllida (talk) 21:09, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
[W]hich of articles are still in need of action? I recommend that you begin by reviewing all the articles you published in April for possible copyright violations and unsupported content. I’ve already identified six above. You can use tools like Earwig’s Copyvio Detector, as I did, and also perform a second full review to ensure the articles meet our sourcing and attribution standards.
Given that these issues arose from a decision to perform partial reviews—despite encouraging others to conduct full ones—I believe it's appropriate that you take the lead in addressing them. This is also a valuable opportunity to align practice with policy and help restore confidence in our review process. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:25, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There was a context why it happened and measures taken to avoid copyvios so it is not a current issue. I can elaborate at my talk page if needed.
All, please check for copyvio at time of archival, esp. content prior to April 22 when copyvio checker link was added to templates.
Meanwhile I will tag with Category:Archived by Gryllida at time of archival and aim to clear this tracking category of unchecked edits and copyvios.
Hope it helps. Gryllida (talk) 15:41, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

┌────────────────┘
Thanks for the progress so far. Of the six flagged articles, two have been fully corrected and sighted, one remains unedited, and another still has issues. Four total still contain publicly accessible plagiarism.

Since all are archived, admin sighting is required. Until then, any unresolved plagiarism remains publicly visible.

This reflects a broader process gap in how we handle copyvio and plagiarism in published articles. It’s not about blame, but about strengthening our standards and systems.

I am happy to help draft solutions, whether technical or procedural.

Feel free to edit the following table as progress is made. In many cases, I have updated the Talk page of the articles below. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 17:39, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

1) read task description below:
  • move my messages appropriately so they are under the table and not above it
  • as i have unprotected the pages temporarily, check the pending edits in the pages from the table
    • if they were significant content edits over 24 hours after publishing, and did not have a correction, undo them
    • if plagiarism is remaining or was not solved properly, fix it up
    • if you are reviewer: if edits are satisfactory, sight them, or otherwise leave a note both here and at article talk with specific instructions about what needs to be done
2) when you are ready to do something and/or did something, leave a message both here and at article talk page
(you do not have to do them all, if you do something with one page, it helps a lot)

While I appreciate the effort to organize cleanup, I want to emphasize that per policy, it remains the reviewer's responsibility to ensure articles do not contain plagiarism at the time of publication. Delegating the cleanup of problems introduced by an incomplete review, especially when all changes to a published article must still be sighted by a reviewer or admin, doesn’t resolve the issue; it multiplies the work. Unprotecting archived articles and asking others to fix them simply spreads the consequences of a poor review wider, rather than preventing them in the first place. If we want to reduce workload, the most effective step is to ensure full and proper reviews before publication. The amount of time spent on this has already become disruptive to the project. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:01, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Verify in published articles

The following published articles contain {{verify}} which should be removed prior to publishing. The template is not rendering any text to the published article (by design) but is still present and should be removed. All articles are also edit protected so an admin must remove the template. Alternatively, if edit protection is lowered, I will make the necessary changes.

I have also created User:Michael.C.Wright/MarkupManager to make it easier to manage article markup. It is javascript and will need to be installed. Installation and usage instructions are available.

Isn't it more of the fact that visibility is hidden? Leaderboard (talk) 11:50, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure I follow your question. The template doesn't render any visible markup unless the article is in draft, so while it's not explicitly using visibility=hidden, it's effectively hidden on published articles. That said, it shouldn't be present in published articles at all.
If you want to reduce protection on those pages, I can remove the template. Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 13:14, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

0% similarity is not a bad thing, unless there is definitely similarity with another article. Earwig's percent similarity should also not be taken as an absolute. Human judgement is still required. Things such as article titles in our Sources section can increase similarity, but are not an example of Plagiarism and therefore not something to worry about or address. I have added some screenshots to Help:Earwig's copyvio detector to help clarify how to use the tool. Bottom line; I would recommend focussing more on writing articles in your own language. For some reason, several of our published articles have the following meta tag:

This tag instructs search engines and crawlers not to index the articles or follow any links in the article. This is a pretty big SEO mistake and could be a contributing factor in our reduced page views.

This appears to be placed even with __INDEX__ placed at the top of the article, as I've tried with "UK voting age to be lowered to 16, among other reforms."

I don't know what is overriding the magic word, even when explicitly placed at the top of our article, and assigning 'noindex' to article pages.

This definitely has a negative impact on our articles being listed by search engines such as Google.

Is this something an admin can take a look at or something we need to go to Phabricator to get resolved?Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 16:42, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Report the vandal here - 50% done - Please use {{User}} template, it is causing me big discomfort as i do not have a clickable link to the user's contribs. please do this in the future. like this "Cowicide4758 (talk · contribs) is vandalism hoaxer" now this is 100% done.

Pure vandalism. BigKrow (talk) 22:51, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I’ve warned the user and blanked the page once more. Please also be careful not to get drawn into an edit war, especially over a user page. While user pages are given a bit more leeway than articles, that leeway is limited. In cases of blatant vandalism, it’s better to report it and step back rather than engage in back-and-forth reverts. Repeated reverts can themselves become blockable behavior.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 23:41, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to have been a communication breakdown.
There has been ongoing vandalism at WN:VD. The “skibidi” and related LTA accounts responsible for it now appear to be globally blocked. I applied minimal protection (autoconfirmed users) to the redirect. This was not intended to override Bddpaux’s work; I simply saw the request and the dispute and acted on it.
@BigKrow, user pages are generally left to their owners unless there is clear vandalism or other serious abuse. The IP editor’s suggestion to protect the page was reasonable, though their delivery could have been more constructive.
@2A00:1370:8186:BB3:A30C:5EA3:D6AA:40E6, thank you for reporting the issue; the page has been protected. A few notes: if you create an account, your IP address will no longer be publicly visible, and your requests may receive more positive responses. Also, please be aware that we do not have a policy to “assume good faith.” Comments such as “If you really not gettin' it, then you are a useless administrator” are taken at face value and can come across as hostile. Not exactly a recipe for success when asking someone for assistance.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 22:53, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
User 74.195.77.161
1) Please do not add templates like 'stop vandalism'. They are not helpful. They must be accompanied by a comment.
2) When making a request here, please include links to the concerned diffs.
3) You have done too many warnings to "User talk", please stop editing 'User talk' for the next 12 hours or so. Please keep your contributions specific and constructive.
Thanks. Gryllida 02:30, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Bro what did you mean ☠️☠️☠️ 74.195.77.161 (talk) 03:15, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your use of ‘Vandalism’ templates is confusing and erratic. What is your purpose for applying them? We need a coherent explanation if we are to assume you are acting in good faith.—-Bddpaux (talk) 03:21, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Bro this is a wiki, so like you can just discuss with him, then everything becomes better. He rolled back some of my edits as well, but the final result was good; this is a wiki, collaborate and discussion is everything here. Sheminghui.WU (talk) 05:47, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

For some reason, edits from admins are showing up in the pending changes. Shouldn't admins bypass that? Ternera (talk) 03:07, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Both admins and reviewers can self-sight their changes. In some cases they may be explicitly asking for a second opinion in the talk page, for example with corrections. I've also noticed that scripts, such as archive scripts may not be configured properly to self-sight changes, in which case the admin using the script needs to double-check their changes are sighted (myself included).Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 15:41, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

74.195.77.161 (talk · contribs · page moves · block user · block log)
I'm not sure I agree with removing talk page access at this time. What was the offending, unconstructive nonsense? I see they placed an unblock request today with a short (and unhelpful) reason, but I don't see that as a reason to remove TPA.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 19:31, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
They were using it as a playground for purposes other than requesting unblock. And this, while technically before the block, is very telling. Maybe I'm just harsher than you are, though. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:30, 24 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn’t describe it as being “harsher,” just a difference in how we’re reading the situation. I’m still new to handling vandalism at this level, so I’m sure my tolerance for letting an IP ramble on a talk page is higher than it probably will be with more experience. There’s also an element of judgment here that comes with time, and you have more of that than I do. I appreciate the clarification and the context.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 01:40, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to override me since you are a local sysop on the project if you think it was too harsh of a block. Ternera (talk) 14:57, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's all good. I was trying to say to Pppery above that I'll defer to you both on this one. You had revoked TPA just as I posted my question and I just left the question to learn.
I might have had a different opinion altogether if it was a registered/named account with some collaborative history, but since it was an IP account and the revocation seems to be temporary, I think it's fine.
Thanks for the continued support as a global sysop! You guys are much appreciated.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 17:37, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Restoration of deleteed work

I was told to post here requesting the restoration to sandbox of Dancer Yoshiko Chuma performs at the Children’s Magical Garden in New York City which was outright deleted for reasons I am unaware of. Tduk (talk) 12:17, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(by @Gryllida) Tduk (talk) 12:17, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Bddpaux i undeleted it, seems first hand report.
Hi @Tduk as it was undeleted, please rename the page to your user space within next 5 days.
Regards, -- Gryllida 12:04, 21 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the article to Tduk's userspace as a temporary restoration so the original author can retrieve their content. This approach is not explicitly set out in policy or guidelines that I’m aware of, but Wikinews:Admin action alerts/Archive 11#Undeletion request reflects it as a past practice for unpublished OR, on a temporary basis.
This article is now outside the publication window, so further debate over its WN:Freshness is unlikely to be helpful. The broader issues have recently been discussed at length at Wikinews talk:Newsworthiness#Re-evalutation, without an actionable consensus being reached.
@Tduk, please copy any content you’d like to retain for off-wiki storage within the next two days. I have marked the page as abandoned and scheduled it for deletion after that period.
Going forward, discussion about possible changes to freshness or review practices is probably best focused at Wikinews talk:Newsworthiness and related policy and/or Water cooler pages, where concrete proposals can be developed.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:26, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why does @Gryllida's comment say 5 days and you said 2? 5 is what I was going by. Though I see both have passed anyway. I guess I won't be gatwicking it. Would something have prevented me from copying it to another userspace page? Where is the policy on userspace pages? Tduk (talk) 04:00, 26 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

False positive from bot attack filter

Hi there! I tried to comment "I personally oppose the usage of Miraheze because it contains trackers that are hard for users to disable" on Wikinews talk:Migration, but the bot attack filter stopped me. Would someone please help fix this? GrinningIodize (talk) 15:07, 6 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This was trigged because your account has fewer than ten edits and you posted the word "Miraheze" in the edit summary (included automatically, as it's the section name in which you tried to reply). The rule you triggered is a Bot attack filter. Once you have made more than ten edits, you should not trigger that rule again.
Feel free to contribute to any of the articles in our developing queue to reach your first ten edits. ツMichael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 15:33, 6 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Note that CheckUser requires elevated privileges that admins do not have by default.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by this: "...there was a flag user here before called I make flags now blocked."
To request a check, use Wikinews:Requests for CheckUser. If no one responds there, you can then escalate the request to m:Steward requests/Checkuser.
I don't see any vandalism in the edits so far and none of their edits have been deleted by another admin. I'm not sure any admin action is necessary at this time.

The article Yellow Thursday 2016: Reserved folder names has already been tagged for deletion for four days. It is inappropriate for Wikinews in multiple ways, as it is an unsourced story, which supposedly takes place in 2016, about a teacher forcing a schoolboy to urinate in his pants, what kind of names can be used for folders in Windows XP, and a paragraph about a different person not involved in the main story.

Please delete the article and block the user who created it: 192.0.2X.16 (talk · contribs)

Requested change to Special:AbuseFilter/45

Please modify the filter conditions, because Wikinews does not have {{unlocked userpage}} (the filter code was imported directly from English Wikipedia to here).

page_namespace == 2 &
!('/' in page_title) &
page_title != user_name &
!('autoconfirmed' in user_groups) &
global_user_editcount < 500

Thanks. Codename Noreste (talk) 01:45, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Given the limited admin resources on English Wikinews, I think we should keep it as is -- I went to modify the filter for you, but if the code breaks we don't really have the resources to amend it. The bug here doesn't really affect anyone, as the runtime is short and anyone can use {{unlocked userpage}} even though the template doesn't exist. Someone's welcome to create that template – it might be an easier option. Microchip08 (talk) 00:31, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

User talk page protection request

An LTA has been vandalizing my talk page across multiple projects and has started on here as well. They have also targeted User talk:Quxyz, User talk:EF5, and User talk:Hurricane Clyde. I'd like protection for my talk page and consideration for protection of the others. TornadoLGS (talk) 18:09, 11 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Our protection policy does not discuss user talk pages specifically, so there is no guidance on how to proceed.
Done I have semi-protected your talk page to auto-confirmed users only.
Both accounts involved in the vandalism have already been blocked as well.
Wikipedia recommends the following for protected user talk pages (w:WP:UTPROT), which you might consider:

Users whose talk pages are protected may wish to have an unprotected user talk subpage linked conspicuously from their main talk page to allow good-faith comments from users that the protection restricts editing from.

Since you aren't active on this project, I don't anticipate the protection being much of an issue. I've subscribed to your talk page (and the others) to passively keep an eye on it.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 03:24, 12 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Any way you can semi-protect my user talk page at least temporarily? Because I just had to revert another round of vandalism (I was logged out of Wikinews but logged into another project, technical difficulties is why you see another TA reverting a TA edit). Ive had probably a half dozen fake block messages on here and other wikis. I just had my talk page on EN-Wiki protected for three days over it. Putting unessicery block tags. BigKrow (talk) 21:54, 12 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

See above. I'd like my user talk protected if possible. There has been a pattern of fake block tags for about a week on various wikis. I had two of my UT pages protected, one on English Wikipedia (3 days) and the other on Simple English Wikipedia (a month) for the same reason. Hurricane Clyde (talk) 22:13, 12 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
1) Ps, that TA (~2026-25750-4) is the one that posted the most recent round of fake block tags on my talk page.
2) Also, please DO NOT block the TA that reverted said tag (~2026-25397-9), as the second edit was from me, I was accidentally logged out. Hurricane Clyde (talk) 22:20, 12 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I've just taken down fake block messages from a bunch of other talk pages that the TA of concern has placed. Including at least one from @BigKrow (you're welcome). Hurricane Clyde (talk) 22:28, 12 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to block you both for 24 hours for edit warring but I'm not since there is a deadline for the Roblox article.
The project is already in disarray due to possible closure, lack of activity, and broad disagreement about how to move forward. We need to find our way back to article development and publication.
Please don't respond about who started it or who's right and who's wrong. It doesn't matter. Both of you should have stopped and stepped back and neither of you should have continued to edit war.
I believe you both had good intentions but got caught up in the moment.
Thank you both for continuing to contribute constructively to the project.
@Kannotlogin, you don't have much more time for that article before it is stale. I don't have time this morning but may have time later today to take a good look at it (unless someone else does before me). Please go over it and button it up and make sure that all of the issues identified on the talk page by reviewers gets addressed.
That article now should be classified as WN:OR, which changes the rules for it. Please familiarize yourself with that policy and start working to get the article compliant. You should probably place a COI statement on the article talk page as well.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 13:53, 13 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Michael.C.Wright,
Thank you for your patience and for the chance to correct the article. I apologize for the earlier disruption; I will not engage with the other user again.
I have completed the steps you requested to make the article compliant with WN:OR:
  1. Original Reporting: I added the {{Original reporting}} template to the top of the article.
  2. COI Declaration: I posted the formal COI and Original Reporting declaration on the article's Talk Page.
  3. Stale status: To address the timing concern: The story is currently trending (major sources from Jan 6-9), and the French Wikinews validated and published the article yesterday (Jan 12), confirming its current relevance.
The article is now ready for your review. Thank you. Kannotlogin (talk) 14:48, 13 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Tefepit (talk · contribs · page moves · block user · block log)Kannotlogin (talk · contribs · page moves · block user · block log)I am not a check user and this isn't the proper location for check user requests. See Wikinews:CHECK.
However, I will say that WN:CHECK states "Obvious sockpuppets may be treated as such without using CheckUser." and in this case, it seems obvious.
I will also say I don't believe the sockpuppets were maliciously used or created with malicious intent.
I think a reasonable solution is for @Kannotlogin to either clearly and ambiguously unambiguously declare the socks on both user pages, or request one of the accounts be deleted.
Unfortunately, we have very little guidance locally regarding socks. In the absence of local guidance, we could reference w:WP:SOCK, which I don't believe has been violated here (no misuse, disruption, etc).

Both ChatGPT links you provided generate an error "Unable to load conversation..." for me. I'm not sure how AI could help here. The legitimacy of the record is established[26] and its newsworthiness is also established by the sources used by the article.
I understand it looks fishy that the main subject wrote the article. But they provided a COI as requested by another reviewer and in the review process, it was made sure that only verifiable facts were published.
I also agree that the socks should be openly declared or even remedied (by requesting one be deleted). @Kannotlogin, there could be sock issues on other projects, who's policies I'm not familiar with. You should be aware of m:Sock puppetry.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 20:23, 22 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
User:Tefepit is removing deletion tag on Quinton Declare empty category.
@Michael.C.Wright BigKrow (talk) 13:03, 23 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I think we need to pause here and let the existing process run its course.
We have already asked @Tefepit and @Kannotlogin to weigh in, and until they respond, there is no benefit to continuing to escalate this across multiple pages.
At this point the discussion is fragmented between my talk page, Tefepit's talk page, deletion requests, and category pages. That fragmentation itself is becoming disruptive. Please refrain from opening additional threads or monitoring individual edits related to this issue.
Once the involved users have responded, we can evaluate next steps calmly and based on policy rather than suspicion or speculation.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:08, 23 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Tefepit, @Kannotlogin, based on the CheckUser findings at d:Wikidata:Requests for checkuser/Case/Kannotlogin and the resulting block for misuse of multiple accounts on Wikidata, you are advised to discontinue use of the Tefepit account on Wikinews and to ensure that all future contributions are made solely through the Kannotlogin account, in full compliance with local policies and guidelines.
At this time, I am not aware of any violations of Wikinews policy associated with your activity here. However, if other editors believe there are local policy concerns that should be examined, they are welcome to raise them for review.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 13:24, 26 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean? The Template messages page is a useful collection of templates to use on user talk pages, such as when warning them, as I did at User talk:Soul1362. Many templates in the category aren't documented on the WN page. HKLionel TALK 09:54, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I think having a comprehensive warning system for different issues is important to combat anti-vandalism and improve user behavior. I'll get started. HKLionel TALK 10:24, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks mate. In this wiki unlike Wikipedia there is no "assume good faith" policy. Instead there is "never assume", so if someone was seen being a fool, the block may be much earlier done because there is no time (in time constrained environment for working on news) to warn a user three or five times. Just a FYI as the long bulky ugly looking templates from Wikipedia are not that necessarily often used here. I often just write 3-5 words for a warning depending on context and then block on next occurrence. For obvious spam there may be zero warnings. Not using twinkle here nor seeing anyone else with it. See WN:Never assume... Gryllida 10:31, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, got it. On the other hand, sometimes it just saves time to have templates ready than to have to type out warnings every time, and seeing as others already made the templates, might as well help editors who are interested in spending time on using them. It's good for future reference as well, so I'm willing to do it. HKLionel TALK 10:48, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
