Wikinews:Easy Peer Review (2025 version)

From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!
(Redirected from Wikinews:EzPR 2025)

This is the 2025 version of the Easy Peer Review gadget, built on the legacy of the current/classic one. It includes a more modern design and additional features.

Getting Started

If you are a reviewer, EzPR 2025 will be automatically enabled for you. You don't have to install or enable it manually. For non-reviewers, installing the script will not work.

To use it, go to any article that you want to review (make sure it has the {{review}} template). You will find a "Review (EzPR 2025)" option in your "Actions" menu (in the Vector 2022 skin) or the "More" menu (in the Vector 2010 skin). After clicking this option, a form will appear at the top of the article.

At the top of the article content, you may also see some buttons such as "Start a Review" and "Mark Under Review". You can click the Start Review button to open the review form as well.

Quick Start

This is a quick-start explanation of the review interface, without going into too much detail. For more information see the sections below.

  1. Click the "Start a Review" button at the top of the article page.
  2. A form will open. Fill it in from top to bottom; it won't take long.
  3. Review Details and Tools: This section is just for reference. It shows the article's author, timestamp, and current ID. No action needed here.
  4. Review Criteria: This is the main part. You'll see 5 criteria, each with a dropdown. For each one, select:
    • Pass — it meets the standard
    • Not Ready — it needs work
    • Not Reviewed — you're leaving it blank
    • If you mark something as "Not Ready", a text field will appear below it. Use it to briefly explain why.
  5. Comprehensive Comments: Once you're done with the criteria, write your overall review comment in the text area at the bottom of the form.
  6. Submit: Click "Submit Review". A confirmation dialog will pop up, confirm it, and the review will be submitted within a couple of seconds.

That's all there is to it. Happy reviewing!

Understanding the Review Form

The review form will open at the top of the article.

Header Section

At the top right of the form title, you will notice several buttons. Here is what they are for:

  • Settings : Click the settings button to open a dialog with options. You can choose to enable or disable certain features based on your preference.
  • Move to sidebar : Click this button to shift the form to the sidebar on the right side. You can move it back to the article view by clicking the Move to article button on that sidebar. (Also check the notes about sidebar mode)
  • Help icon : A link to this documentation page.

Review Details and Tools

This section displays basic details about the article, such as the revision ID being reviewed, the timestamp, and the page creator. This section may also contain tools like "Check for Copyvio". More tools may be added in future updates.

Review Criteria

Screenshot of the EPR 2025 Version Criteria section.

This section contains the five main review criteria that determine the review outcome.

  • If all five criteria are selected as "Pass", the final result will be a pass, and the article will be published.
  • If any of the five criteria are selected as "Not ready", the final outcome will be a fail, and the article will be flagged with a {{tasks}} template.

Pass with Exception

There is a third scenario: "Pass with Exception". A new option called "Exception" is available for the Newsworthiness and Style criteria. If one or both of these criteria are selected as "Exception", and the rest are selected as "Pass", the final outcome will be considered "Pass with Exception", and the article will be published.

Comprehensive Comments

In the comprehensive comments text box, reviewers can write their main peer review feedback. If you feel the comment box is too small and need a larger, more comfortable workspace, click the "Expand " icon located on the right side of the heading.

Two tools are available to assist reviewers in writing comments more efficiently: "Sentence Marking (SM)" and "Comment Template". These are optional.

Sentence Marking

Sentence Marking allows you to specify one or more phrases from an article that contain issues requiring modification. These phrases are highlighted both in the article and in your peer review comment, helping authors quickly locate and correct problematic text.

Click the " SM" button to open the Sentence Marking section. At the top of the section, you will see two available modes: Dynamic Mode and Static Mode. Dynamic Mode is selected by default. The differences between these two modes are explained further below.

Marking Text

You will be prompted with the following introductory text:

Highlight any text in the article to instantly mark an issue, or click "Add Manually" below.

To mark a phrase, follow these steps:

  1. Select any text in the article that you want to highlight or mark.
  2. A "+" icon will appear next to the selected text.
  3. Click the + icon. A popover will open; enter your comment or issue description and click Save.

You have successfully marked that text. Repeat the process for as many phrases as needed.

Each marked phrase will be added to and displayed in the SM section as a separate entry. To remove a marking, click the dustbin icon on the right side of the entry.

To flag a text as unsourced, check the checkbox on the left side of its entry.

Difference Between Dynamic Mode and Static Mode

Feature Dynamic Mode Static Mode
How text is highlighted Text is highlighted using a gadget. Text is highlighted by wrapping it in the {{highlight}} template.
Effect on the article No edits are made to the article itself. Edits are made directly to the article to mark the text.
Workflow for editors Editors simply correct the text as per your comment — no further action needed. After correcting the text, editors must also manually remove the {{highlight}} templates.
Visibility in edit mode Highlights are not visible in edit mode. Highlights are visible in edit mode, since the text is wrapped inside the template.

Comment Template

Click the "CT " button to open a dialog containing available comment templates. You can choose any of these to format your review. These templates provide a structure or pre-written comments that you can fill in based on the article, helping you write reviews more efficiently.

Submitting the review

After completing the review and writing your comments, click the "Submit Review" button at the bottom of the form. A confirmation dialog will appear.

In this dialog, you will find an option to notify the author about the review. Check the box to notify them, or leave it unchecked.

Click "Confirm Review" and wait a few seconds. The script will post your review to the talk page and apply the necessary changes to the article.

Save for Later (Partial Review)

If you do not have time to complete a full review, get interrupted, or can only check specific criteria, you can save your progress by clicking the "Save for later" button.

If another reviewer (or you) starts a review on the same article later, they will be notified of the partial review. They can choose to continue from where you left off or start fresh, ignoring the previous partial review.

Additional Details

The sidebar mode is not available for mobile reviewers. If you are using the Vector 2022 or Vector 2010 skin, you should not face any visual issues. There is no guarantee for other skins.

For Vector 2022 users: When activating the sidebar mode of the peer review form, make sure to hide the "Main menu sidebar" (on the left) and "Tools menu sidebar" (on the right). This prevents the screen from becoming cluttered with too many sidebars, ensuring you can actually view the article content.

Saving for later

If you choose to save your review for later, please be aware that the partially completed review data will be stored at Wikinews:Easy Peer Review (2025 version)/data. This means the review data is visible publicly and is not private to you.

Highlight and Unsourced marking

Considerations for Highlighting and unsourced Marking:

  • Pass Reviews: Highlighting and unsourced markings on the article will be ignored (not applied) if the review outcome is a "Pass."
  • Exact Matches: When using Sentence Marking, ensure you copy the exact sentences from the article into the sentence fields.
  • Complex Syntax: If a sentence structure is too complex; for example, containing too many interwiki links, templates, image captions, or text within template parameters, the script may be unable to successfully highlight it.

A Valid review submit

To submit a valid review, please ensure you assess at least one of the five criteria. For a "Fail" or "Not Ready" review, adding comprehensive comments is required.

Please note that inline markup (highlights) cannot be used in the Sentence Marking section for a "Pass" review (i.e., when all five criteria are selected as pass).

Notifying article contributors

If you choose to notify the contributors in the confirmation dialog while submitting the review, a message will be posted on the user's talk page.

Users can choose not to receive such notifications by setting their preferences on the notification preferences page. A user may opt out of receiving notifications entirely. In such cases, the user's name will be disabled in the confirmation dialog.

Post Publication Chnages Review (PPCR)

The EzPR 2025 gadget provides an interface for reviewers to help them verify, compare, and approve or reject post-publication edits to an article. The Post Publication Changes Review (PPCR) is a feature that falls under EzPR 2025, and was introduced in February 2026 following feedback gathered from active reviewers in this discussion.

It does not introduce any new functionality beyond what the default approach already offers, but adds a structured interface and notification system to streamline the review process. For full documentation on PPCR, including how to access and use the interface, please visit the documentation sub-page. As this is a recently introduced feature, some functionality may still be under development. For any issues or suggestions, please discuss them on the talk page.
