Make it a Daily Paper![edit]

moved from Talk:Main Page

I have one major suggestion:
Due to the fact that articles will be constantly edited and modified, it would be hard to rely on Wikinews for up-to-date news as things happen. I suggest a different approach.
At the end of every day a committee of certain members (sysops perhaps) would pick all of the articles that are important. The reason it's a committee is so other members won't be screwing things up and arguing stupidly. Anyways, they'd put the article summaries and a link into an e-mail, which would go out via mailing list. It would have all of the major events of the day on it. There would be links to other sections for curious people.
The whole advantage of this system is that people would have time to review articles before they are sent out. Making it a plain news site leaves no review time before it's out in public. What do you think? Cap'n Refsmmat 16:19, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Oppose:

  • Having sysops or just a few members pick articles "so other members won't be screwing things up" seems anti-wiki to me. --119 19:34, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Someone tried to get a "Version 1.0 Editorial Board" up and running on Wikipedia. When Dr. Adam Carr suggested edit controls on its contents, the idea was quickly shot down. One editor suggested that strict controls will "never happen". From reading the foundation issues page, I concur that this should be non-negotiable. I would be happy with a cursory review for profanity, libel, and outright falsehoods, but certainly not to decide whether a story is "important" (someone suggested a story covered by almost the entire mainstream media was unimportant in another discussion in the review poll). However, there is a director for current news on Wikipedia's main page, so I guess the "foundation issues" are in the eye of the beholder. --DV 04:11, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Having sysops pick articles is something I put in for a safety measure. Sure, it could be done by all members, but then there would be large arguments over what is "important" and what isn't. Having a committee do it reduces that risk. Besides, the daily part of it would only be a sideshow, while the articles are still accessible on the main page and whatnot. Make it a Weekly Newsmagazine![edit]
