Review checklist

[edit]

This checklist outlines the steps for reviewing an article on Wikinews prior to publication.

1. Confirm readiness for review

[edit]
  • Ensure the article is marked {{review}}, not {{develop}}.
  • Confirm you are uninvolved in the article's development.
  • Confirm the article has the minimum number of sources (Synthesis 2, OR 1)
  • Only proceed if you have the reviewer permission.

2. Start the review

[edit]
  • Place {{under review}} at the top of the article to signal that a review is in progress and discourage editing conflicts.

3. Evaluate the article

[edit]

Check the article against the five required criteria from Wikinews:Reviewing articles:

  1. Copyright
No copyright violations in text or images. Images must be properly licensed and attributed. You can use Earwig's copyvio detector to assist in checking for potential copyright violations. See also: WN:Plagiarism
  2. Newsworthiness
The event must be timely, relevant, and newsworthy per the Wikinews:Content guide.
  3. Verifiability
    • All factual content must be supported by cited sources or original reporting notes, per Wikinews:Cite sources. At least two independent sources are required in synthesis articles to support the focal event. At least one source is required for original reporting
    • If time allows and a contributor is responsive, flag unsupported statements and mark the article "not ready." If time is short or contributors are unavailable, remove any nonessential, unsupported statements and continue reviewing.
  4. Neutrality
Tone must be neutral. No editorial commentary, bias, or unsourced opinion, per WN:NPOV
  5. Style
Article must comply with the Wikinews:Style guide

4. Final checks before passing

[edit]

Ensure the article includes and correctly formats the following:

  1. {{Date}} with the correct publication date.
  2. Main article content.
  3. {{Haveyoursay}} (optional).
  4. Source list using {{Source}}:
Archive each URL with the Wayback Machine (use archiveurl=).
Ensure all parameters are completed if values are obtainable, such as authors, language if non-english, medium if PDF or other, etc. See {{Source}} documentation for details.
  5. Remove any remaining markup or hidden comments:
  6. Verify image licensing and attribution with {{Image source}}, {{Image}}, or equivalent.
  7. Verify all links resolve properly and do not land on disambiguation pages
  8. Convert {{w}} links to local links when they resolve to local categories.

5. Record your decision

[edit]

Use the Easy Peer Review gadget to Provide specific, actionable feedback. Explain what was correct, incorrect, or needed improvement.

Easy Peer Review should automatically:

To manually record your decision:

If passed review:
  • Change date in {{Date}} to today's date
  • Add {{Published}} to the bottom of the article, below the Sources section (this template adds the "Share this" box with social media links)
  • Remove any article stage templates such as {{Develop}}
  • Remove any markup templates such as {{Verify}}, {{Highlight}}, <!-- HTML notes -->, etc.
  • Add {{peer reviewed}} with pass to the article's talk page. Follow template documentation to complete a full report.
If failed review:
  • Place {{Tasks|re-review}}
  • Add {{peer reviewed}} with fail to the article's talk page. Follow template documentation to complete a full report.

6. If article passes

[edit]
  1. Update the Main Page (lead shuffle).
  2. Create a Wikidata item.
  3. Monitor the article for 24 hours after publication.
  4. Consider linking to our article from appropriate articles in sister projects.

7. Post-publication revisions

[edit]
Per Wikinews:Archive conventions
  • All edits post-publication must be reviewed by a reviewer and accepted (sighted) or rejected.
    • Changes during this period should be limited to corrections of factual inaccuracies, typos, bias, imbalance, etc.
    • Wikinews must not rely on the wiki process to update articles with new facts post-publication. This is a basic requirement defined by Meta: m:Wikinews
  • After three days, the article should be edit-protected.
  • After seven days, the article should be archived.
  • Use {{editprotected}} to request edits after the protection period.

8. Tips for reviewers

[edit]
  • Prioritize newer submissions when multiple articles are queued.
  • Review improved resubmissions promptly.
  • If time permits and there are enough active reviewers, avoid publishing if you made substantive changes. Remember WN:IAR in times of low activity.
