Bot to convert DPL to static lists

@Koavf, thanks for the link to the Phabricator conversation. Are you comfortable running the bot mentioned by Ladsgroup? I've personally never used a bot.

We'd also have to get bot+admin privileges, and possibly flood? That may take some time to get approved by the community and implemented by one of our 'crats (or a steward if neither respond).

If its possible, we should get a manual test run as a proof-of-concept first, as it will impact nearly every single published article.

Will it produce output of some sort, some where, so we can tell what pages were affected? I'd imagine we want to hold of on changing pages such as Main page, Newsroom, etc until the last minute if we could. Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 19:29, 15 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Tragically, I am too ignorant to run the bot, but to answer just one of your good questions, yes, anyone running it should have a flood flag. I'd recommend posting to Phab and asking if a user there is competent to run the bot. :/ —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:59, 15 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
You may have seen my conversation with @Ladsgroup at the Phab ticket. I'm not quite sure of what they meant when they said this: "I wouldn't go through the normal process of access bot rights and co. This is a technical change."
Do you?
I don't see how they won't need admin rights or flood rights, unless they throttle it to avoid flooding, but that doesn't address fully protected pages (which many are).
We may still need the bot to handle the Wikinews:Archives if the bot is somehow able to convert the DPL output to clean, static output. See convo below.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:39, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Our Archives

The archives at Wikinews:Archives are heavily dependent on DPL. I'm not sure how to handle that cleanly and quickly. {{DateDPL}} is a key culprit.

Any thoughts @Bawolff, @Asked42, @Metropolitan90, @Lofi Gurl, @Acagastya?

One idea is to create a new, static structure that is much less elegant, but at least somewhat effective at presenting the archives. But even that, I'm not sure how to accomplish.Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:32, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Delete files

Somebody should probably delete all the files in Category:Media files on Wikimedia Commons, as well as check if any other files should be moved and deleted. Star walker (talk) 10:28, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Disable welcome bot

Maybe it is time to disable the welcome bot to welcome all new users? It will fail as soon as this wiki gets closed anyway. --Zabe (talk) 20:07, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

It isn't a bot, but an extension. See also: Wikinews:Water cooler/technical/archives/2026/March#Wikinews Welcome and temporary accounts
I think a phab request is needed for that. You might also inquire at phab: T421796. You may also propose there the cleanup of the existing welcome messages. Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 22:04, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
