The inevitable dig...[edit]

Cyclists who die as a result of being hit by a motor vehicle fall into two categories: those who were wearing helmets (in whihc ase it's not mentioned) and those who were not (in which case it's usually mentioned, in a tone of gentle disapproval at their folly, which of course led to their downfall).

A series of post-mortem investigations of cyclists killed in road collisions found only one who died only of head injuries - the only one who was wearing a helmet. Most cyclists who die of head injuries in road collisions, also have other mortal injuries. No cycle helmet has ever been made to withstand the force of a motor vehicle impact, the forces in such collisions routinely exceed the rated capacity of Formula 1 motor racing helmets. And between 2/3 and 5/6 cyclists injured by motor vehicles are blameless. No car drivers are known to have been killed in colisions involving bicyclists.

Morals:

  1. Cycling is not dangerous, driving is dangerous.
  2. Comments about cycle helmets in articles on cyclists killed by motorists are crass.
