I'm a journalist by profession and education who has worked in online media for more than five years. During this time I've paid particular attention to the emergence of open source software, open access research and open content projects such as Wikipedia. I strongly believe that Wikinews is an important evolution for journalism, which is dominated by huge corporations. I also feel very strongly that Wikinews can compete with such syndicated content providers as Reuters.

I joined the Wikinews project in February 2005 because I want to contribute to its growth and development. I aim to spur the creation of science, technology and health articles and have already begun contributing them myself.

Admittedly, my goals aren't entirely altruistic. I'm the founder and editor of Betterhumans.com. As a relatively small operation, we can't afford to pay large content syndication fees to companies such as Reuters. Furthermore, I want us to spend more money on the creation of original editorial addressing issues and developments that others aren't, not on such things as press release rewrites that come through syndication providers.

I'd be interested in speaking with others about getting more science, technology and health content into Wikinews, and look forward to doing what I can to contribute.
