Surjeet served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of India from 1992 to 2005 and was a member of the party's Polit Bureau from 1964 to 2008. Before joining the Communist Party of India (Marxist) he was part of the Communist Party of India which he joined in 1936. After the Indian independence in 1950, Surjeet went underground for four years.
His health was declining and for the first time missed the CPI(M) Polit Bureau in April 2008. He had been in hospital since July 25. His funeral is set to take place on August 5.
