The Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS) held its annual conference from October 20-24, 2024, at the Pacific Bay Resort in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. The five-day event brought together radiation protection professionals, researchers, and industry experts to discuss advances and challenges in radiation safety under the theme "Radiation Protection from Bananas to Boats."
Dr. Gillian Hirth, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), delivered the opening keynote address, titled "Radiation Protection Stewardship in a Rapidly Evolving Environment." The conference program featured presentations on topics such as medical radiation, environmental monitoring, non-ionizing radiation, and regulatory frameworks.
"The aim of the conference was to foster discussions across a broad range of radiation protection aspects and emerging fields, including training the next generation of radiation professionals, showcasing new technologies and applications, and sharing the importance of effective communication and stakeholder involvement," said Brent Rogers, ARPS 2024 Conference Convenor.
A special international radon symposium was held on the final day, featuring speakers from multiple countries who discussed the latest research and regulatory approaches to radon exposure. The symposium included presentations on radon in workplaces, measurement techniques, and health impacts.
Associate Professor Lee Collins delivered the prestigious Boyce Worthley Oration, sharing insights from his career in medical physics and radiation safety in a talk titled "Adventures in Radiationland - A Personal Journey from the Invisible Light to the Blinding Light."
The conference also featured exhibits from radiation detection equipment manufacturers, nuclear science organizations, and radiation safety service providers. Social events included a welcome reception, conference dinner, and networking opportunities for attendees.
The event concluded with an awards presentation recognizing contributions to radiation protection in Australia and New Zealand. The next ARPS conference is expected to be announced in the coming months.
Attendees at the conference included Athreya Buddhavarapu, who was sponsored to attend by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.
