Late tuesday, the San Francisco Giants announced that Willie Mays had died that afternoon. His death was reported at 5:52 P.M. (Pacific Time Zone). The MLB (Major League Baseball) said that Mays was "one of the most exciting all-around players in the history of our sport," and that they were "heartbroken" about his death.

Willie Mays was a two time winner of the MVP (Most Valuable Player) award as well as winning the 1954 World Series with the Giants. He also won the Golden Glove Award 12 times.

Willie Mays was born on May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama and began to play baseball professionally in 1948 in the Negro Leagues. In 1950, he joined the New York Giants. The following year, Mays was named rookie of the year. In 1951, he was drafted by the US army, which he got out from in 1954. In 1954, Mays was named MVP. In 1963, he became the first baseball player to be paid $100,000 per year. Mays was traded to the New York Mets in 1972. He retired from baseball in 1974. The Giants retired his number. In 1979, Mays was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He died at the age of 93 years old.

In 23 seasons, Mays had a batting average of .301, had 3,293 hits, and had 2,000 runs, including 660 home runs. He also had 525 doubles as well as 338 stolen bases.
