I say good on him!!! Cyclist cycle all over the road thinking they own the place and they don't move when you're behind them.

-Whereas I say he ought to be drawn and quartered. Why ever should cars possess sovereignty of the roads, particularly when there are innumerable benefits to cycling (ie, no pollution involved, cheaper road maintenance, increased commuter health)? Cyclists pay no road usage taxes

Oh, to have an email address to get Jeremy Clarkson to comment on this. :D

I am in Belgium, we have *lots* of cyclists on the road, and, yes, there have been numerous incidents where I have entertained that little fantasy number of mowing them down. They travel at significantly less than half the speed of motorised transport and a disturbingly significant percentage of them have no formal education as to how to be a good road user. Get a group of 20? They think being a courteous road user involves cycling three or four abreast, going 25kph, and taking up more road space than a 40-wheel articulated lorry. Even where there are clearly marked cycle lanes (and Belgium has a lot of them) they will still cycle side-by-side and take up space clearly marked as for other traffic. Then they come up to traffic signals.... It's red! Quick! dodge that pedestrian, mount the pavement, and pretend you're a pedestrian and thus entitled to cross the road. Gimmie a break. If we're talking about a "pack" of 50 cyclists, that is an obstacle that is going to be very difficult to get round. I'd dearly love to see the groups that do this dealt with. No, not by mowing them down, or - as in this case - overtaking them and slamming the brakes on, but by them getting pulled over by the police and charged with causing an obstruction.

I think it is quite interesting that if you're a driver and another driver causes a problem you don't suddenly think that all drivers are a problem and should be banned from the road, only that driver. Yet it is frequent that people highlight a few incidents involving cyclists as justification for moaning about them as a group or in Brianmc's case, having fantasies of running cyclists down. Sure there are cyclists that ignore red lights, ride on the pavement whenever and are inconsiderate to motorists who in most circumstances should be allowed to pass easily where possible.

I, as both a regular cyclist and driver, do of course get to see both sides of the coin. I don't run red lights on my bike or inconsiderately hold up other motorists although I have been known to use the pavement which is illegal in the UK but the police are meant to exercise a generous amount of discretion. I certainly wouldn't cycle through a pedestrian precinct or whatever but will sometimes consider use of the pavement appropriate on say a fast road with limited opportunities for motorists to pass where it is in an area with very small pavement usage such as more rural areas.

One instance where I used the pavement was in the early hours of the morning through a village on the approach to a blind left bend where I could hear traffic approaching behind which would have difficulty passing. It turned out in that instance to be the police! I wasn't stopped however which wouldn't have been too surprising simply due to the time of day, there aren't many people out in the early hours of the morning let alone cyclists. Presumably Brianmc would approve of, shock horror, my use of the pavement in these circumstances.

Don't let the bad encounters with cyclists tar the reputation of cyclists as a group. Just as there are many poor drivers, there are many poor cyclists. Adambro - (talk) 20:28, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

When's the last time a road had to be fixed up due to damage caused by cyclists? oh right never, that's why they dont pay road tax, because the roads dont get damaged by them. KangaRUDE !!

I could see how a guy late for an appointment having a bad day could lose it, when a bunch of cyclists hog the road. They should either make arrangements to close the roads and reroute traffic or travel single file and allow cars to pass.
