Kasparov heads the part of foreign influence that wants to gut Russia and give it back to the robber-barons from the last decade. Its a small segment but has contacts with all of those wishing to exploit a great country and render its population slaves again. As to competition to Putin, there are many much larger nationalist Russian parties, even the damn neo-nazi party in Russia is bigger than that led by Kasparov. He is nothing, but foreign media likes to focus on him whenever he is punished for breaking laws, and ignoring all of the others also punished at the same times.
