Wow.

[edit]

Who would have thought that this would happen. I have always been afraid mof the stone arch.

The Stone Arch Bridge used to be a railroad bridge. It survived that, so it should last for some time as a pedestrian bridge. (SEWilco 04:15, 3 August 2007 (UTC))Reply

*The* Stone Arch Bridge and other quirks

[edit]

We refer to the Stone Arch Bridge always with the "the" particle. It is the "view from the Stone Arch Bridge" and "taken from the Stone Arch Bridge." "The Stone Arch Bridge has been closed." "Rescue workers on the Stone Arch Bridge" etc etc. We consider the Stone Arch Bridge named because it is made out of stone arches and not because it is a formal name. Similarly with "the 10th Avenue Bridge" or "the Third Avenue Bridge." Locally, we know the 10th Avenue Bridge as such and not as the Cedar Avenue Bridge and most especially not called the 10th Avenue Southeast Bridge. Also we rarely refer to 35W as "thirty-five west" we always call it "thirty-five double-u." However, 50/50 percent of the time 35E is called both "thirty-five e" and "thirty-five east."

And the 35W bridge is erroneously being reported as the link between St. Paul and Minneapolis and between the U and downtown. Sure you can definitely get to those places via that bridge but it is probably the least favorable route to take. And also CNN is showing St. Paul in Northeast when it is very very far east of Minneapolis nowhere near this bridge. The 35W bridge served two major purposes only: A) half of north Mpls suburbs and north **St. Paul** suburbs coming off 36 and B) going to Duluth or gambling at Grand Casino in Hinckley. Though I guess for most people coming from the south, it's the fastest way to get to Rosedale Mall. Davumaya 07:16, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Writing flow is bad

[edit]

Is the writer of this story allergic to the particle "the" because nothing seems to flow right when it sounds like a foreigner wrote this. Davumaya 07:16, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

possible cause of collapse?

[edit]

So we were discussing the collapse in my physics class. Everyone remembers the Tacoma Narrows bridge collpase right? that was cuased by the wind making the bridge vibrate at its "natural frequency". Not sure how to explain what that is but anyways. Now since jackhammers were beign used on the bridge, they could have vibrated the bridge to its natural frequency and that may have cuased it to go. Any engineer types know more about what im saying? 68.100.170.3 03:45, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

That same concept was on Mythbusters a while back. It's an interesting idea. However, it would have to have a vast amount of force (eg wind) to create sufficient vibration. It's also been said that jackhammers were not in use at the exact time of the collapse, though I haven't seen this verified anywhere.
(I live in the city, so I hear a lot of talk; no links, sorry.) irid:t 03:47, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

In memory of the victims of the bridge collapse. May we never have to go through anything so unfortunate again. Rickyrab 14:18, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
