Scientists : Appendix has purpose[edit]

The article quotes Duke University surgery professor, Bill Parker: the worm-shaped appendage also acts to manufacture these helpful germs, Parker said.

I understand that bacteria are individual organisms with a history; they cannot be manufactured as such.

My question is, how does the appendix (I have just surrendered mine to the surgeon, incidentally) replenish its stock of particular bacteria when they have been eradicated by some disease (such as cholera).
