The European Commission has proposed to extend the Temporary Protection Directive until March 2026 to let Ukrainian refugees, who have fled the Russian invasion, to stay in the EU. This is because, according to the EU, "given continued Russian attacks on the civil and critical infrastructure across Ukraine, safe and durable conditions for the return of people to Ukraine are not currently in place." The proposal will be submitted to EU's Justice and Home Affairs Council on June 13.
The directive, which had previously been extended to March 2025, grants refugees rights such as accommodation, healthcare and the right to work. Almost 4.2 million displaced people from Ukraine are in need of the temporary protection in the EU. The Temporary Protection Directive was originally initiated in March 2022.
