Heavy rains and flooding took place in the southern India, in Tamil Nadu state and the Karnataka state since Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department issued an "orange alert" on Wednesday and Thursday. The rains were part of monsoon season.

By the late night of October 16, the rains stopped in northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, where the traffic resumed to normal.

Chief Minister M. K. Stalin advised private IT firms to work from home from October 15 to October 18. Early in the week, trains, roads, and air transportation were disrupted, with some schools and government offices closing. Several homes were also submerged.

Local authorities forecasted that the rain would continue in selected regions for the next few days.
