North, South Korea announce summit about 'denuclearization and peace' for April 27

Yesterday, North Korea and South Korea announced a top-level summit to be held on April 27. The summit, the third of its kind, was announced in a joint statement released through South Korea's Ministry of Unification.

The two nations agreed to the summit after talks between North Korea's Chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, Ri Son-gwon, and South Korea's Minister of Unification, Cho Myoung-Gyon.

Minister Cho told a press conference, "Today, both sides exchanged their opinions on matters like a possible agenda for the upcoming inter-Korean summit[...] The two Koreas have decided to join forces to make the summit a success, based on our consensus about how historically significant the summit will be in terms of denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the inter-Korean relationship".

The April 27 summit would be attended by North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and South Korea's President Moon Jae-in, if it unfolds as announced. The previous top-level summits took place in 2000 and 2007. Unlike the previous two summits which took place in North Korea, the upcoming summit was scheduled to be held at the Inter-Korean Peace House, controlled by South Korea.
