Effective on Wednesday, January 1, the densely populated Edmonton community Oliver will be renamed, as approved by City Council in February 2024. "Oliver" is the name of Frank Oliver, who has been shown in recent research that he promoted discrimination of Indigenous peoples and denied black immigration in the 1930s. Although a distinguished politician and local, this research mars any further memorial.
City council approved it renamed "Wîhkwêntôwin" which is a Cree name meaning "circle of friends".
