Police shot a woman in the chest who later died at a hospital after approaching officers with a knife in Fort Lee, New Jersey on early Sunday morning. The woman’s name was not released. She was taken to Englewood Hospital in Englewood, Bergen County, New Jersey, where she was said to be dead at 1:58 a.m. EDT (1758 UTC), according to hospital officials. The police were responding to a call from her brother who said his sister "was having a mental health crisis and needed to go to the hospital," according to officials.
Police arrived at The Pinnacle apartments on Main Street in Fort Lee. The woman told police to not enter the room but when she did not reply police forcefully entered the door. Another woman was also found in the room. A knife was taken for evidence from the scene. The Attorney General's Office is investigating the situation.
According to prosecutors, the woman "approached the officers" with a knife and was shot in the chest. She later died at the hospital.
It is unsure if the woman was holding the knife at the time as she walked towards the officers, the Attorney General's Office said.
