Add topicSOURCE: Press release 250 Young Quakers will be organising an event, including floating candles on the lake at the University of York, to mark Hiroshima Day at 21.00 on 5th August 2005 during the annual Quaker BYM where over 1600 Quakers have been meeting. The event will coincide with the mid-point of the bomb's journey between the US and Hiroshima, 05.00 am Japanes time. Everyone is welcome to attend the event and help to witness and reflect on what peace means today. There will be photo opportunities available.
"Quakers have always been invovled in peace work and continue to face the challenge in today's society. During the week long annual gathering, Quakers will be hearing from Helen Steven, Gandhi International Peace Prize winner and Quaker, on 'Prayer, Stillness and Activism' and hearing about her international peace work including visiting the NATO headquarters in Brussels, demonstrating at Faslane naval base and even being imprisioned for her convictions.' Throughout the week leading up to the Hiroshima day witness on 5th August, young Quakers will be planning, organising and preparing the event, including contacting the local community and the media. Hiroshima day took place 60 years ago at 08.16am, Japanese time on 6th August 1945.
