That was the longest quake I've felt to date. I wasn't certain for parts whether it was continuing or whether I was having vertigo... Sai Emrys ¿? 04:03, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OR[edit]

I got the quote from the USGS on TV. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 03:39, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

palo alto phone service failed?[edit]

I called a friend in Palo Alto almost immediately after feeling the quake here in SF and got through fine. Any source for that statement? 71.141.145.132 03:42, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No...removing now. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 03:43, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tried calls via AT&T from two cell phones in San Mateo, and it was out for about 15 minutes. Probably a load issue. Did not try 911 (priority) calls. 76.191.130.220 04:10, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was wandering around in a "Maize" (corn field maze) at the Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont (approx 15 miles northwest of the epicenter). None of our party of appox. ten people claimed to feel the quake (which presumably happened while we were running around and jostling one another among the corn stalks). There were a few hundred other people running around the maze at the time and no one else seemed to notice either. (All of the screams seem to have been from kids being "scared" by friends and by the hallowe'en costumed employees of the "Maize" attraction). About have of our party received calls on their cell phones (asking about the quake) and most of those reports referred to Palo Alto. So the shaking and such as felt more strongly in parts of Palo Alto than in the area of Fremont we were in. (Palo Alto is about twice as far from the epicenter, and across the Bay from the epicenter). A few of our party and a few others in the maze complained of "all circuits busy" problems with their cell phones. That's the extent of the outage so far as I saw it. (Perhaps an hour later I received voice mail from my boss and was able to return his call from my Verizon with no issues).JimD 18:19, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I felt it[edit]

I was (visiting) in Fremont and there was a most impressive and extremely noticeable rattling and shaking of the house followed by a swaying, on-water feeling for a few minutes. The noise approximated someone tossing four or five, really really large, filled bookshelves off one story onto a lower floor which was above us... multiple times. Keith Crossley

... etc.

Dunno how many of these are actually geologically related. Someone who actually knows this stuff please speak up. Sai Emrys ¿? 04:03, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I live 5 miles from the epicenter and had loud shaking in my house but only a few small items knocked over. I can help point out that only the quakes listed as relative to Alum Rock, CA and Milpitas , CA are related to the 5.6 shock. California is a big state - none of the others are even close by. Ikluft 05:40, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Quakes can also be far away (e.g. opposite side of the earth) yet be geologically related (e.g. on the same fault line). Hence why asking for an expert. Sai Emrys ¿? 06:08, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, you asked for anyone who knows the area to speak up. I did. I can help show you what's on the same fault line (the Calaveras Fault) on this map: http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/FaultMaps/122-37.htm You'll see that except for some normal little 0.x and 1.x background noise, all the quakes on the same fault were aftershocks. So far the largest aftershock was a 2.2 at 1:05AM. As for sources WikiNews will accept as related quakes, you can pretty much just count on the aftershocks - anything else will be a waste of time. Nothing has looked abnormal in recent years there. That segment of the fault was quiet and now it broke. Ikluft 08:48, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that "MAP 5.6 2007/10/31 03:04:54 37.432 -121.776 9.2 8 km ( 5 mi) NNE of Alum Rock, CA" is the 5.6 big earthquake. —170.138.100.250 00:04, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
