Leona Lewis is the first FEMALE British artist to reach #1 since 1987. In 2006, James Blunt spent one week at #1 with "You're Beautiful." Blunt is, in fact, British -- just not female.

Furthermore, Elton John spend 14 weeks at #1 in the U.S. in 1997 with "Candle In The Wind 1997/Something About The Way You Look Tonight."
