How is this possibly a good news story? Why is WikiNews descending to the sensational level of the regular media? LET THE POOR MAN FALL OFF HIS BIKE.
- It is news as long as it is neutrally reported, without any snide remarks. I've tried to rephrase the last paragraph a bit to address that issue.--Eloquence 7 July 2005 16:33 (UTC)
- I agree - it is news worthy.. without the london bombings it actually made the homepage of cnn for a minute. Adidas 7 July 2005 22:08 (UTC)
- I disagree. No one would post anything about "President Mungabe of Zimbabwe falls off bicycle". The only reason anyone cares is because Bush is a celebrity. This is on par with writing an article on "Jennifer Lopez seen kissing Brad Pitt in popular New Orleans nightclub". Disclaimer - I am anti-bush (libertarian) --RossKoepke 7 July 2005 23:47 (UTC)
- Personally, I think we should be maximally inclusive and only use Template:Notnews to kill a story when absolutely necessary. If someone writes about Mugabe, let them. If someone writes about Bush, let them. Once we have more than 10 stories per day on a regular basis, we need to start thinking about which ones go on the Main Page. And this is where the Bush/bicycle story will likely be considered of minor importance. So, let's first create the problem of having too many stories, and then worry about how to solve it. ;-)--Eloquence 8 July 2005 00:27 (UTC)
- Thanks Erik for dealing with that, I knew this would cause a bit of controversy! I felt that with the seriousness and saddness of yesterday we needed something lighter to relax people again after a shocking day. I can tell you that I read first about this on the second page of the best selling broadsheet newspaper (not a tabloid) in Ireland yesterday. I put this in wackyness to reflect the fact that it was not hard news. Oh and if Mugabe falls off his bike I welcome you to write a story on it - as Erik said we should concentrate on the volume first then we can prioritise. If you do a quick google news search you will find 325 results - with CNN, BBC News, The Boston Globe, Aljazeera, The Telegraph, The Observer, and Reuters among them. The worlds most powerful politicin crashs his bike and injures himself at a meeting with the leaders of 7 of the other most powerful countries in the world - I think that is relevent and respectable news... and if it does bring a smile to us Europeans, all the better ;) → CGorman (Talk) 8 July 2005 11:20 (UTC)
- Maybe big news corporations covered this incident - but personally i think they shouldn't. A problem with the media today is that they bombard us with nonsense - Wikinews should be different and rather focus on the relevant issues. Just my opinion... -- wortwechsel
- It's news. It may not be to your personal taste - but it is news nonetheless. -- Davodd | Talk 8 July 2005 11:45 (UTC)
- I am a Bush supporter, but even I don't think this is news. It wouldn't be news if we had an article named "Michael Moore cleans out New York City buffet", why does the US president falling off a bike constitute as news? --Mrmiscellanious 15:34, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- If Michael Moore does do that I promise to write an article on it if you want! If this has no place in the news - then why have so many national papers and major news agencies covered it? Oh and as I said before it gave us Europeans something to laugh at on an otherwise horrible day. → CGorman (Talk) 15:38, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- Eh, you're right. There should be a little more comedic articles on Wikinews - just, try to make it funnier next time :-) --Mrmiscellanious 15:44, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
Bush Sr. fell off Segway?
[edit]I could have sworn it was the other President Bush who fell off the segway, and the picture that circulated depicted him and not the current President Bush... 24.73.48.232 18:43, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- Nope, it was definitely George W, I remember listening to it a few years ago. --Mrmiscellanious 15:20, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
