There are actually some English-language speaking people in Poland who even know how to use a wiki, and even in the "village" of Toruń - a good place to ask for local information is probably here: pl:Dyskusja:TVN24: Martwy łabędź w Toruniu zarażony ptasią grypą. Of course, locals can only give info about the fact of the riverside being quarantined or maybe say who/when found the birds, if that person has been checked in a hospital, etc. Boud

I note this page has links to a polish version and what I think is a Russian version. We also have a Category:Avian Flu and an Avian Flu infobox that can be used on the English wiki. You can cite our earlier articles as sources in your own if you back-translate, and you can cut content from your own article's translation here where it repeats stuff that has frequently been covered on en. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:32, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tag

[edit]

I have tagged this article after reading the single provided source. Prior to that I have tried to make good-faith edits to make the article more readble.

Paragraph 1: Can we have one report, even in Polish with babelfish link to back up that there has been concern in Poland for a number of months.
Paragraph 2: The association with SARS needs sourced.
Paragraph 3: Transport of infected livestock is not mentioned in the cited source. It must be removed or sourced elsewhere. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:48, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Babelfish does not translate polish. i agree that the three points you mentioned would need sourcing (e.g. from the wikipedia articles), except that i'm not sure that the first case really refers to months of concern in Poland, i read it as months of concern in the world, or in Europe (which in some people's POV, is the same thing as "the world", yes, i admit that eurocentrism exists as well, not just US-centrism...), so IMHO it's rather a case of rewording more carefully (documenting months - or years(?) - of concern is probably not difficult). I have done a little bit of work on this today, removing the unsourced material. I will add the original stuff below a little later (after I do some more copyediting). It is a great article, it's just it needs a little work - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 00:39, 16 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

original reporting

[edit]

If someone wishes to add the original reporting tag, then feel free to add the following info (and maybe remove unsourced info or do a {{wikipediapars|[[w:H5N1|H5N1]]}} for people wanting more background?) if it helps, since i live in w:Toruń and have observed the following Monday-Tuesday 6-7 March:

  • it seems there is an "inner" zone right next to the river, in which no access is allowed (except for residents, who are very few in number), while the whole town centre is considered an "outer" zone
  • the "inner" zone, which includes part of the bank of the Vistula next to the town centre, is cordoned off by police - no cars or ordinary citizens are allowed to enter the Philadelphia Boulevard ("Bulwar Filadelfijski"), whereas normally the riverbank is a popular place for casual walks and exercising dogs
  • there are disinfection mats for people to walk over in the main intercity bus station ("PKS") in Toruń, since it constitutes an entry/exit point to the "outer" zone
  • there are big signboards around the town warning people that feeding birds is strictly prohibited
  • there are big signboards around the town prohibiting bringing animals into or out from the quarantined zones
  • the main roads out of Toruń have disinfection "sand mats" that vehicles must necessarily pass over to disinfect their tires, constituting another barrier defining the "outer" zone
  • there are warning signs about infection risks under storks' nests in villages near Toruń
